Job summary

NTWRX is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to design, develop, test and commission industrial automation systems for a varied portfolio across the UK. The role combines office engineering with hands-on site commissioning, offering exposure to Siemens TIA Portal, PLCs, HMIs and drive systems.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team, contribute to FAT/SAT, travel for commissioning activities, and support project delivery with strong problem-solving and customer-facing skills.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer, or PLC Software Engineer.
  • Experience developing PLC software from first principles.
  • Knowledge of HMI development and industrial communications.
  • Experience commissioning automation systems within manufacturing or industrial environments.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and control system documentation.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for commissioning activities.
  • Experience with motion control, servo systems, and robotics integration.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking technologies and machine safety standards.
  • Industry 4.0, data acquisition, or digital manufacturing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PLC and HMI software using Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Develop control system solutions for bespoke machinery and automated manufacturing systems.
  • Produce software documentation, functional specifications, and test procedures.
  • Configure and commission Siemens PLCs, HMIs, drives, and associated control equipment.
  • Carry out system testing, FATs, SATs, and customer demonstrations.
  • Perform on-site commissioning, fault finding, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Integrate industrial communication networks and fieldbus systems.
  • Work with project managers and customers to ensure successful delivery.
  • Support continuous improvement and technical development within the team.

The Role

As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and commissioning industrial automation systems for a diverse portfolio of projects. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and specification through to commissioning and customer handover. This role offers a mixture of office-based engineering work and site commissioning activities, providing exposure to a wide variety of automation technologies and applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PLC and HMI software using Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Develop control system solutions for bespoke machinery and automated manufacturing systems.
