Job summary

Lonza is seeking a Controls and Instrumentation Engineer in the United Kingdom. The role focuses on modeling, implementing, and maintaining control systems for biopharmaceutical manufacturing, ensuring safe, compliant processes.

You will configure PLCs, DCS, and SCADA, develop documentation, calibrate instrumentation, and support commissioning and validation activities, collaborating with manufacturing, quality, IT, and external suppliers.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Significant experience in controls and instrumentation in regulated manufacturing.
  • Strong PLC programming experience (Rockwell or Siemens).
  • Experience with DCS (Emerson DeltaV) and HMI/SCADA platforms.
  • Knowledge of process instrumentation, calibration, and industrial protocols.
  • Experience in GxP/cGMP with CSV understanding.
  • Ability to read P&IDs and electrical schematics.

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain control and instrumentation systems.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and optimise PLCs, DCS, and SCADA platforms.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation including control narratives and wiring diagrams.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot process instrumentation.
  • Lead commissioning, qualification, and validation activities.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, engineering, IT and suppliers.
  • Drive continuous improvement and train operational teams.

Join Lonza Biologics in Slough as a Controls and Instrumentation Engineer and play a key role in supporting the reliable operation and continuous improvement of our biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. You will use your expertise in automation, control systems, and instrumentation to help deliver safe, compliant, and high-quality processes that support the manufacture of life-changing medicines.

This is a fully site-based role. Working together in person supports close, real-time collaboration and the technical precision needed to manufacture medicines to the highest quality and safety standards.

What you will do
  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain control systems and instrumentation solutions that support biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and optimise automation systems including PLCs, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and SCADA platforms.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including control strategies, functional specifications, control narratives, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot process instrumentation including sensors, transmitters, valves, and analytical equipment to ensure reliable operation.
  • Lead and support commissioning, qualification, and validation activities for control systems and instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, engineering, IT teams, and external suppliers to deliver effective technical solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, conduct root cause investigations, and provide technical support and training to operational teams.
What we are looking for
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Significant experience in controls and instrumentation engineering, ideally gained within a biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, or other regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Strong experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting, including platforms such as Rockwell Automation or Siemens.
  • Experience working with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), particularly Emerson DeltaV, and HMI/SCADA platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of process instrumentation principles, calibration techniques, troubleshooting methodologies, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience working in a GxP/cGMP regulated environment, with knowledge of computerized system validation (CSV) principles.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical documentation, with excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
