Job description

NUS is a confederation of over 440 students’ unions representing just under 4m students and apprentices across Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

NUS Charity is an exciting organisation developing and championing strong students’ unions. We connect our members and curate services to deliver advice, guidance and crisis support to students’ unions. [JA1]

We do professional differently. We are a progressive charity representing students’ unions across the UK. The sector is inclusive, fun, dynamic and representative and we put students and students’ unions at the heart of everything we do. We are challenging but are committed to creating a supportive and flexible environment which pushes your personal development in your everyday activity.

What we do

Students’ unions can be transformational hubs for students, staff, and wider society. NUS Charity support our member’s development to enhance their capacity and harness opportunities to maximise their positive impact. We do this in many ways, from managing a purchasing consortium to drive great value for our members, to our development activity, supporting the best potential in students’ unions - we strive to make a difference to our members.

The student movement is fast-paced and sometimes challenging, but we’re also a big family who support each other.

We see anti-oppression as central to our mission. Education isn’t working unless it’s working for everyone in our society. We’re trans inclusive without exception. And we welcome individuals who are up for taking active responsibility for their own ongoing learning on liberation, equity, diversity and inclusion. [JA2]

What’s the job?

The Student Content Creator role is a part-time, fixed-term position within the Communications team, forming part of a six-month Student Content Creators Pilot. The purpose of the role is to bring authentic student voices and perspectives into NUS communications, helping to create engaging, relevant and student-led content across NUS social media channels.

As a Student Content Creator, you will work alongside the Communications team to produce short-form video content for platforms including TikTok and Instagram Reels. You will attend content planning and idea generation sessions, contribute creative ideas to campaigns, and identify emerging social media trends and opportunities to engage student audiences. You may also capture content at NUS events and contribute to content focused on NUS campaigns, students’ unions, surveys and research, discounts, partnerships, events, behind-the-scenes activity and student stories.

You will provide valuable insight into student interests, behaviours and culture, helping the Communications team understand how content and messaging can better connect with different student audiences. You will be encouraged to provide feedback on proposed content and contribute to the development of creative approaches throughout the pilot.

The role will involve working to content briefs and agreed deadlines, creating and editing content to an appropriate standard, and representing NUS professionally online. Content will be subject to NUS editorial approval, with the Communications team retaining responsibility for editorial standards, brand consistency, accessibility, safeguarding, data protection and content ownership.

You will report to the Head of Communications and will receive support from the Communications team through induction and onboarding, brand and accessibility guidance, content briefs, editorial feedback, equipment guidance where required, and regular check-ins. You will also participate in evaluation throughout the pilot, contributing to the assessment of the programme’s impact on reach, engagement, content quality, representation and the authenticity of NUS communications.

Who you are

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to demonstrate a strong combination of creativity, communication skills, and experience with social media content. As a current student, you’ll understand the student experience and the importance of creating content that feels authentic, engaging, and relevant to a student audience. You should be confident presenting on camera and creating short-form video content for platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, with an awareness of current social media trends and how they can be adapted to different audiences and purposes. You should be comfortable developing creative ideas, working from briefs, meeting deadlines, and editing content to a high standard. Strong storytelling and communication skills will enable you to share information in an engaging and accessible way, whether through student-focused content, interviews, events, or campaigns. You’ll need to be confident representing NUS professionally online and contributing ideas and feedback throughout the content creation process. You should also be enthusiastic about collaborating with others, identifying emerging trends, and creating content that effectively communicates NUS campaigns, events, partnerships, research, opportunities, and student stories.
