Job Summary
Applications are invited for a post as consultant in respiratory medicine. This is a replacement post joining a team of 14 consultants currently providing elective and non-elective services from two acute hospital sites in South Tyneside and Sunderland. The team are supported by specialist nurses and provide care for the local population of nearly half a million people, with a high prevalence of acute and chronic respiratory disease. Predominantly a young department, the team is dynamic and friendly with plans in place for further service expansion and development of sub-specialty care for the local population. Candidates with general respiratory experience are invited to apply, and various sub-speciality interests can be accommodated. Job plans can be tailored to individuals to encompass special interests and flexible working. The trust supports two local Medical schools with opportunities to become involved in teaching and hosts a number of doctors in higher speciality training, along with medical and nursing students.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be based at either South Tyneside hospital or Sunderland Royal hospital depending on experience. The department is working towards a single team model of care, and there are plans to develop further cross site working. Elective and non-elective activity is provided on both sites, with opportunities to become involved more closely with recent service developments, such as the Targeted Lung Health Check, a Virtual Ward and plans for combined Infectious Disease and Respiratory Specialty clinics. Consultants will have the opportunity to be involved in research and to become part of a Research team including Specialist Respiratory Research Nurses. All Consultants will have time to participate in weekly MDTs, regular Departmental meetings and to lead in their specific specialty interest field. Job Description
Job responsibilities
At South Tyneside, you will have continuing responsibility for care of your in-patients on Respiratory Medicine (Ward 10 and outliers) and your respiratory outpatients; you will cross-cover in-patients of Consultant colleagues during periods of holidays, study leave and (short term) sickness. You will be expected to supervise junior Medical Staff allocated to you and you may be a nominated educational and clinical supervisor to identified junior medical staff assigned to Respiratory with appropriate training provided if necessary. If you are an Educational Supervisor, this will attract additional PAs in your job plan to cover for this. You will also be expected to undertake as part of the team an active role in regular departmental Clinical Governance meeting, including morbidity & mortality (M&M) reviews.
