Job summary

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join the Department of Neurosurgery. The department comprises 14 substantive Consultant Neurosurgeons within the wider Directorate of Neurosciences, which also includes Neurology, Neurophysiology, and the national highly specialised Mitochondrial Medicine Service. This service provides comprehensive, specialist care to a population of approximately 2.4 million across North East and Cumbria.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Neurosurgery in Newcastle is renowned for clinical excellence, high throughput, and active research. It offers a full range of clinical neurosciences with excellent neurological and diagnostic facilities. The post involves contributing to regional neurosurgical services, working alongside specialist neurosurgeons in delivering comprehensive care for neurosurgical disorders. Responsibilities include managing general neurosurgical elective cases, participating in on-call and out-of-hours services, and joining a team specialising in skull base surgery. The appointee will handle independent clinical responsibilities, administrative duties, and collaborate with department leadership.

Job responsibilities

  • Providing regional neurosurgical services alongside colleagues.
  • Managing on-call duties.
  • Contributing to skull base surgery services.
  • Participating in outpatient clinics, operating sessions, pre-operative assessments, ward rounds, and reviews as per job plan.
  • Engaging in administrative, audit, research, and teaching activities during SPA sessions.
  • Contributing to clinical governance, multidisciplinary audits, risk management, and NHSLA assessments.
  • Supporting complaint investigations and reporting within trust timelines.

Person Specification

Education & Qualification (Essential)

  • MBBS or equivalent, GMC Specialist Register entry or expected within 6 months.

Desirable

  • Intercollegiate Fellowship or higher degrees in relevant areas.

Clinical Experience (Essential)

  • Training in neurosurgery with independent practice.
  • Experience with subspecialty in skull base surgery, including open and endoscopic techniques.

Desirable

  • Expertise in MDT settings, advanced skull base surgery, and endoscopy.

Management & Administration

  • Involvement in management, clinical guidelines, and understanding of clinical governance.

Teaching & Research

  • Supervision, teaching experience, research involvement, publications, and grant management.
