An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Consultant Radiologist in General Radiology to join a progressive, well-equipped, and supportive Diagnostic Imaging team based in County Antrim.
This is a newly funded substantive post designed to support increasing clinical demand and development across cross-sectional imaging, plain film, and ultrasound services. Dual-site and cross-county working is encouraged to support service delivery across the catchment population. The appointee will join an established consultant body covering general diagnostics as well as a wide range of subspecialty interests.
The associated facilities serve as recognised teaching units affiliated with Queen's University Belfast (QUB) and Ulster University (UU), with active postgraduate training through NIMDTA. The post-holder will be actively supported to develop individual special interests and undertake clinical teaching.
Core Diagnostic Radiology: Provide general diagnostic reporting and imaging across plain film, cross-sectional imaging (CT and MRI), and ultrasound.
Specialist & Multidisciplinary Input: Participate actively in clinico-radiological conferences and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings (such as Haematology, Colorectal, Urology, or Respiratory pathways).
Vetting & Clinical Advice: Undertake protocolling, vetting of requests, and clinical discussions with referring hospital specialists and primary care clinicians.
On-Call Commitment: Participate in the first-tier consultant on-call rota (currently operating on an approximate 1:18 frequency) with prospective cover.
The rota utilises a "Radiologist of the Day" (ROD) daytime emergency coordination model.
Overnight emergency CT reporting after 20:00 is currently supported by an outsourced teleradiology provider, with the on-call consultant providing emergency oversight, major incident cover, and non-CT guidance.
Dedicated home workstation/teleradiology equipment is provided by the service (broadband required at private residence).
Teaching & Academic Support: Supervise, mentor, and teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate specialty radiology trainees.
Quality Improvement & Governance: Actively engage in clinical audit, discrepancy meetings, discrepancy reviews, and implementation of quality and accreditation standards (including the Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme - ISAS).
A formal job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director within three months of taking up the post, tailored to the successful candidate's subspecialty interests. Applications for an 11-PA contract can be facilitated if mutually agreed.
Direct Clinical Care (DCC): 7.0-8.0 PAs (including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, plain film sessions, vetting/admin, and MDT preparation/attendance)
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.5-2.0 PAs (for CPD, audit, revalidation, service governance, and teaching; an additional 0.5 SPA is typically allocated during the first 3 months)
Emergency & On-Call Work: 1.0 PA allocated within the job plan
GMC Registration: Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC, London) and a valid Licence to Practise (must be in place by time of appointment).
Specialist Register: Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Clinical Radiology (or eligible via CCT within 6 months of interview, Portfolio Pathway/CESR, or European Community Rights).
Cross-Sectional Imaging: Minimum of 12 months of documented experience in cross-sectional imaging (CT/MRI).
Clinical Skills & Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of general diagnostic radiology, radiation protection, and current clinical governance standards.
