Job summary

Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry - N2 North team. One post available.

You will be providing input for the Community Mental Health Team in Lewisham's Neighbourhood 2 in the North part of the neighbourhood (N2N).

Main duties of the job
  • To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input into the team, alongside the Clinical Service Lead
  • To take consultant responsibility for your sector of the Neighbourhood Community Mental Health team, acting as Approved Clinician and assessing or supervising assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness
  • To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments
  • To act as a source of support, advice and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals
  • In conjunction with the Team Leader, will help to represent the unit at CAG and care pathway meetings and other internal and external meetings where needed
  • To provide reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lewisham during working hours
  • To keep up to date with all developments in research and treatment around acute care pathways and inpatient mental health care

There are four GP neighbourhoods in Lewisham and our community mental health teams (CMHT) are linked to these neighbourhoods. Additionally, Neighbourhood 2, due to its size, is subdivided into two teams - a Central and North team.

We have successfully implemented a new model of community care within the Borough and each of our neighbourhoods is sub divided into two closely interlinked teams working in an integrated manner with each other. These are:

  • Primary Care Mental Health Team (PCMHT)
  • Secondary Care Mental Health Team (CMHT)
Job responsibilities

It is envisaged that the post holder will work 10-programmed activities over 5 days. The overall split of the programmed activities is 7.5 to be devoted to direct clinical care and 2.5 to supporting professional activities (as per the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommendation). The timetable is indicative only. The detailed formal job plan will be developed and agreed with Dr Hugh Williams, AMD for Lewisham, and job plan objectives reviewed three months after commencing the post and at least annually thereafter.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status and under S12 OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
Experience
  • Experience in other relevant specialties such as community, in patient, liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions
