We are proud to provide high quality mental health and learning disability services, both inpatient and in the community across five boroughs of Greater Manchester — Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and Tameside and Glossop. All individuals regardless of race, age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, religion or belief, marriage and civil partnership are encouraged to apply. We would also encourage applications from individuals with a lived experience of mental illness, either individually or as a carer.

We offer a range of benefits and opportunities, including generous annual leave for Agenda for Change and Medical and Dental staff, flexible working, access to Continued Professional Development, involvement in improvement and research activities, staff wellbeing services, and discounts across retail, leisure and travel.

Our vision is for a happier and more hopeful life for everyone in our communities and our staff work hard to deliver the very best care for the people who use our services.

Responsibilities
  • Take clinical responsibility for the in-patients and lead the multi-disciplinary team. All patients are detained under The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007).
  • Ensure all necessary documentation (including Section 17 leave, Consent/Treatment, section renewal forms) is correct and up-to-date; provide adequate reports for Manager’s Appeals or Tribunals within the Code of Practice timeframes; ensure appropriate representation if the Consultant does not attend.
  • Maintain Approved Clinician status and Section 12 approval under The MHA 1983 (amended 2007).
  • Provide advice on referrals for PICU and undertake face-to-face assessments for complex cases and referrals from prison services as required.
  • Regularly assess the clinical state of inpatients and participate in psychological and/or family-based therapies as training and interests allow.
  • Attend regular Care Programme Approach meetings to review progress and set longer-term goals, in consultation with family/carers and Care Coordinators.
  • Attend weekly Clinical Team Meetings and contribute to multidisciplinary reviews; normally chair the meeting with the aim of reviewing progress and setting short-term goals aligned with CPA objectives.
  • Consult with family and carers within confidentiality boundaries.
  • Supervise junior doctors (minimum one hour per week), conduct workplace-based assessments, and participate in appraisals.
  • Attend management and Clinical Governance meetings; contribute to audit and adhere to Trust policies on complaints, risk assessment, confidentiality, and annual appraisals.
  • Maintain good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for CPD; keep medical knowledge up to date and participate in the annual Personal Development Plan/Appraisal; maintain GMC registration and licence. The Trust supports CPD and offers study leave for CPD.
  • Contribute to teaching and CPD events locally; attend weekly case conferences, audit meetings, and seminars (Wednesday afternoon in Rochdale). Time may be available for teaching outside these sessions if required.
  • Participate in RHSD service development and share responsibility with other consultants for patients repatriated to future services within the Trust.
  • Liaise with stakeholders (e.g., GP providing physical healthcare to unit patients).
  • Participate in the Tameside Hospital on-call rota (currently 1:11), with a partial middle-grade rota. On-call may involve advising junior doctors or assessing patients in the community, A&E, or police stations; provision of Section 12 Approved Doctor and Approved Clinician services. The on-call rota is expected to merge with Stepping Hill hospital, reducing frequency to 1:30 with on-call covered by middle-grade doctors and the Consultant as third on-call.
  • Participate in quality improvement or service improvement projects for the Care Pathway team and assist in assessing new referrals to the RHS hub as required to manage workload.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Professional registration with the GMC; current licence to practice.
  • Approved Clinician status and Section 12 approval under The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007).
  • Commitment to CPD and involvement in annual appraisal and Personal Development Plans in line with Royal College requirements.
  • Willingness to participate in teaching, CPD activities, and service development initiatives.
