Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist & Deputy Medical Director

Service Line: Male PICU or Female Acute

Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to work at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke. The role involves providing senior medical cover on Nash Ward, our 12-bed PICU for men, or Sandford Ward, our 16-bed female acute service.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining care for all ward inpatients as required. You will also be responsible for auditing medical services to ensure quality in accordance with GMC standards and professional guidelines.

Your expertise will drive life-changing treatments, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for a Responsible Clinician interested in expanding into management as a Deputy Medical Director, with potential progression to Medical Director through our management schemes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead high-quality care provision on Nash or Sandford Ward
  2. Act as a positive role model with a professional attitude towards patients, families, visitors, and staff
  3. Take responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  4. Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations
  5. Undertake investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  6. Conduct ward rounds, reviews, and audits
  7. Lead risk assessment, risk management, and embed clinical governance
  8. Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings
  9. Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfer and leave approval
  10. Maintain accurate patient records
  11. Communicate regularly with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
  12. Engage effectively with patients, relatives, staff, and other stakeholders, maintaining reports
  13. Participate in academic meetings and adhere to professional standards for CPD
  14. Contribute to a 1:6 Telephone On-call rota

Candidate Requirements:

  • Full GMC registration & MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12, and AC status
  • Experience and knowledge in General Adult Psychiatry and mental health diagnosis
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and related codes
  • Excellent communication skills for assessment, treatment, and documentation
  • Commitment to professional development
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent
