Job description

Consultant Psychiatrist on the Sandpiper Ward, an 18-bed mixed gender adult acute inpatient ward at Priory Hospital Southampton. The work centres on assessing and treating up to 18 inpatients, leading ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings, and supervising the Specialty Doctor. One of the hospital's acute wards holds Royal College of Psychiatrists Quality Network accreditation, and part-time or job-share working is considered alongside full-time. Candidates need Approved Clinician status or eligibility for it, and those based outside the area must be open to relocating.

What the job involves

• Provide consultant psychiatric care for up to 18 inpatients, including comprehensive assessments and leading ward rounds
• Deliver high-quality, patient-centred treatment
• Lead the ward clinically, chairing multidisciplinary team meetings and supporting safe, recovery-focused decisions
• Supervise and support the Specialty Doctor and contribute to the wider team's professional development
• Support patient flow through clinical reviews, risk management and discharge planning
• Take part in clinical governance, audits, senior management meetings and service improvement
• Build strong relationships with NHS partners and commissioners

Experience

• Experience of UK acute inpatient psychiatry, gained in the NHS and/or independent healthcare sector
• Strong background in managing patients on an acute mental health inpatient ward
• Substantial inpatient expertise for newly appointed consultants

Skills & knowledge

• Confidence working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Other

• Willingness to relocate if not currently based in the area
