University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist interest in glaucoma. The post covers Glaucoma, Cataract and Medical Retina across four sites including Queen Elizabeth, Good Hope and Solihull.
The successful candidate will manage a wide spectrum of glaucoma cases, perform routine cataract surgery and glaucoma laser/treatment procedures, and work flexibly with clinical sessions.
The Ophthalmology department in UHB is spread across 4 sites -- Queen Elizabeth hospital, Good Hope hospital with the responsible hospital being Solihull hospital. The Department covers a breadth of Ophthalmology Services including Glaucoma, Cornea, Medical Retina, Paediatric Ophthalmology, VR Surgery and General Ophthalmology. The department consists of 37 consultants across the sites.
Clinical sessions deemed clinical activities are by definition 4 hours and the successful appointee will be expected to work flexibly.
The successful candidate is expected to have a minimum of 4 years post-graduate training in general ophthalmology and in addition have further training and experience in managing glaucoma patients. The successful applicant is expected to have a good understanding of modern glaucoma management and be capable of managing routine glaucoma cases. Clinical experience of managing acute glaucoma and complex glaucoma cases is essential for this post. The applicant should also be able to undertake routine cataract surgery, glaucoma laser treatment (SLT, YAG, Diode) and glaucoma surgery.

The department provides ophthalmology services to a large part of the Birmingham population and is a busy department. There is ample opportunity to see a wide spectrum of cases.
The glaucoma service manages adult patients with the whole spectrum of glaucoma. There is scope to perform the full range of glaucoma procedures including SLT and YAG laser, complex cataract surgery in glaucoma patients, minimally invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), Trabeculectomy, Preserflo and Tube Surgery under both general and local anaesthesia.
The successful post holder will have experience in managing acute and complex clinical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma patients.
