Job summary

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust in Carlisle area is seeking a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry to provide expert consultant-led care and to participate in postgraduate teaching, quality improvement, and research activities.

The post offers opportunities to tailor the role around interests (e.g., periodontics, implants, endodontics) with strong links to regional partners and a flexible job plan. Closing date 14 August 2026.

Qualifications

  • Full GMC/GDC registration and specialist status required.
  • Substantial Restorative Dentistry experience essential.
  • Experience with head and neck cancer patients desirable.
  • Ability to lead MDT clinics and contribute to teaching.
  • Experience in audit and clinical governance encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led expert care and referrals for local patients.

Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

An opportunity has arisen for a full‑time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at NCIC. The post holder will join an organisation that values innovative working with supportive colleagues to improve the oral healthcare offer to the population of the region. Aside from clinical service provision, there are opportunities for postgraduate teaching, quality improvement activity and participation in research. The service has close links with other acute medical, dental and surgical specialities in the North East and North Cumbria.

Main duties of the post
  • Provide consultant‑led expertise on referral to patients from general dental practice colleagues and the community dental service, encouraging shared care working to provide appropriate care locally for the population of North Cumbria.
  • Work alongside Orthodontic and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical (OMFS) teams for treatment of patients requiring joint orthodontic and restorative management, and Head and Neck Cancer Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT) clinics.
  • Run and manage outpatient clinics to deliver high quality patient throughput.
  • Provide advice and treatment for Head and Neck Cancer patients via the Head and Neck MDT and support colleagues in Head and Neck Directorate and Special Care with multidisciplinary clinics.
  • Delegate care of patients to dental care professionals within the Community Dental Service.

Person specification
Qualifications
  • Full current registration with the GDC
  • Entry on GDC specialist register in Restorative Dentistry or within 6 months of expected CCST
  • Successful completion of a SAC approved minimum five‑year training programme in Restorative Dentistry or within six months of completion or equivalent.
  • Intercollegiate speciality fellowship examination or equivalent.
  • An appropriate postgraduate qualification in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent
  • Teaching qualification
  • Management/leadership course/certification
Experience
  • Current and significant experience in Restorative Dentistry including treatment of head and neck cancer patients, hypodontia and cleft patients, and advanced restorative procedures.
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the speciality
  • Ability to provide high quality specialist care for patients seen and treated and an expert clinical opinion
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a secondary centre
  • High level of experience in undertaking prosthodontic rehabilitation of Head and Neck cancer patients
  • Experience in attending MDTS for Head and Neck cancer and pre‑radiotherapy assessments
  • Experience of working at consultant level
  • Significant and current experience of working with a variety of multi‑disciplinary teams
  • Trained Educational or Clinical Supervisor
Management and Administrative
  • Ability to lead and work as part of a healthcare team
  • Experience of delegating work to and supervising staff
  • Experience of communication with consultants and senior clinicians across a broad range of medical and dental specialities
  • Ability to interact and work constructively with consultant and specialist colleagues and dental team members in both primary, secondary and tertiary care settings
  • Experience in clinical leadership and management including governance of clinical care relating to Restorative Dentistry
  • Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

As per the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 it is necessary to submit a Disclosure and Barring Service check. DBS charges apply as follows:

  • Standard Check: £21.50 + £6.50 administration = £28 (deducted from salary over 4 months or one‑off payment)
