Job description

Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases

The formal AAC interview panel will be held on 26th June 2025

Paediatric Infectious Diseases Department is the largest of its kind in London, delivering both elective and non-elective activity at a local, secondary, and tertiary level. This internationally renowned, academically led service includes specialty paediatric infectious diseases clinics for HIV, TB, Hepatitis, congenital infections, complex infections, vaccine advice, auto-inflammatory fever syndromes, recurrent infections, and Kawasaki's disease. It provides specialist clinical input to neonatal and paediatric intensive care units, as well as other paediatric services. The service is responsible for paediatric antibiotic policies and antimicrobial stewardship. It is an NHSE-commissioned paediatric centre for airborne and contact High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID).

Main duties of the job

This post holder will be expected to:

  • Work with Infection Prevention & Control, and Microbiology to support children and neonatal teams during outbreak investigations and management.
  • Undertake Paediatric ID clinics as per the job plan.
  • Support SPRs with day case review service.
  • Undertake consultant ward attending duties for 16 weeks in 12 months, including responsibility for external and internal advice and guidance calls.
  • Undertake Antimicrobial stewardship rounds as per the rota.
  • On call for Paediatric ID in a 1:6 rota.
  • Lead the Perinatal Infection Service with support from the outgoing lead, Prof Hermione Lyall.
  • Contribute to the educational, clinical governance, and research programmes within the department.

The 10 PA job includes 2 PA of SPA.

This NHS post aims to strengthen the resilience of the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Team, which currently relies heavily on the academic team for clinical support. It will enable the team to support paediatric and neonatal services within the West London Children's Alliance and across NW London ICB. The postholder will join the acute attending rota, covering wards and providing advice for WLCH and external consults. The role includes leading neonatal and perinatal infections within WLCH and collaborating with the NW London Perinatal Network, including working closely with the infection prevention control (IPC) team to prevent outbreaks.

This position is suitable for post-CCT doctors with clinical training and expertise in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology.

Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
  • On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply.
  • On GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of admission by the interview date, or eligible for specialist registration.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Completed training in Paediatric Infectious Diseases.
  • IT skills and computer literacy.
Leadership/Management Skills
  • Ability to take responsibility, demonstrate leadership, make decisions, and exert appropriate authority.
  • Proven skills in leading, motivating, developing, and managing colleagues' performance.
  • Knowledge of finance and budgets.
  • Staff management capabilities.
Teaching & Training
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff.
Audit
  • Understanding of clinical audit principles.
Academic Achievement
  • Evidence of achievement suitable for appointment at a consultant level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Language
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing English to meet job requirements.

Salary depending on experience: £105,504 to £139,882 per annum WTE.
