A Consultant in Emergency Medicine is required to join the existing team of 14 Consultants at the North Manchester General Hospital. This appointment (10 PAs) will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Contract Terms and Conditions. Consideration will be given to those requesting less than full time working or a job share arrangement.

The consultant team is currently made up of 12 EM consultants and 2 PEM consultants. The department sees over 117,000 patients per year, with approx 25% of these being children. We are a very highly performing ED being the best adult performing ED against the 4 hour patient safety standard and the best performing ED in England for NWAS handover.

The hospital serves an inner city community with high levels of deprivation and complex needs, with a diverse multicultural population. Whilst it is not a designated trauma unit, it does have walk in trauma, and there are opportunities for trauma work at the MTC at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The job is 10 PAs of which 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPAs. The DCC can be worked flexibly within the team as we have an annualised self rostering arrangement. A formal job plan will be reviewed between the appointee and the Clinical Director, three months after the commencement date of the appointee. The exact timetable will be flexible, arranged in discussion with the appointee ensuring that it meets the needs of the appointee and service needs of the Division. The leadership team encourage variability of interests and flexibility to support individual circumstances. Job Plans will be approved by the Clinical Director.

The Job Plan will then be reviewed at least annually. The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year.

Person specification
Education/ Qualifications
  • Primary Medical Qualification (eg: MBChB)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • A valid licence to practice with the GMC
  • FRCEM or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register or a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of the award of their CCT in Emergency Medicine (or recognised equivalent if outside the UK) of the date of interview
  • Post Graduate Degree eg: MD, PhD, MSc.
  • Recognised subspecialty training.
Experience and Clinical Skills
  • Wide experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Broad experience in the management of all aspects of Emergency Medicine
  • Good practical clinical skills
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance and the ethical aspects of Emergency Medicine.
  • An understanding of the importance of evidence based practice
  • Evident of participation in QIPP or audit cycles
  • Publication of research articles, demonstrating and understanding of research methodology and commitments
Leadership
  • Evidence of good organisational skills and leadership skills
Communication
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with difficult situations
Management
  • Evidence of development and management of change
  • Ability to manage risk and end of line decisions
  • Ability to cope with change
  • An understanding of management in the context of the Health Service
  • Able to manage and lead change internally and within multi-agency setting
  • Attendance at management course
Teaching
  • Experience of teaching juniors, medical student and other health care professionals
  • Proven teaching abilities
  • Attendance at teaching course.

  • Evidence of audit work and here this has brought about change
  • Evidence of participation in research
  • Evidence of work submitted for Peer Review
Other
  • Willing to reside within a distance of 30 minutes or 10 road miles from principal place of work.
  • Health Assessment required
  • Appropriate Home Office status to undertake a career post in the UK
