This is a substantive post for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist in the Department of Cellular Pathology at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust, replacing a retiree. The appointee will share responsibilities with colleagues to provide a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective service to the Trust, GPs, and other users.
Applications are invited for one full-time, permanent Consultant position in Histopathology. The department includes eleven Consultant Histopathologists, two honorary consultants, a Clinical Scientist for immunohistochemistry/molecular pathology, and a team of four specialty doctors and a pathologists' assistant.
The department is busy, UKAS accredited, with a varied workload covering nearly all specialties except medical renal and pediatric/neonatal pathology. It processes samples from the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre at Basildon and supports cancer screening programs. The department handles approximately 34,000 surgical and 8,000 cytology specimens annually.
We are an improving organization, recently recognized as the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance and no longer in special measures. Our staff are diverse, with many from minority ethnic backgrounds, and we support apprenticeship programs. We operate from King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital, with recent investments in facilities and plans for electronic health records to improve patient care.
The post holder will contribute to a culture of clinical audit and research, maintaining modern standards and fostering links with external centers like the Royal Marsden. The department boasts excellent immunohistochemistry facilities and conducts most molecular testing in-house, with access to genomic sequencing through collaborations.
The candidate must hold GMC registration and FRCPath or equivalent. Responsibilities include leadership in EDI, ensuring inclusive practices, fostering a positive team environment, and challenging discrimination.
All consultants are expected to attend relevant CPD courses, with the Trust providing limited financial support. Teaching of scientific staff and contribution to clinical education are expected, though undergraduate teaching is not currently part of the role.
The role requires a DBS check due to safeguarding requirements.
