Job summary

We are seeking a new substantive Consultant Anaesthetist to join our friendly and proactive department at Ipswich Hospital, part of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT). This post has been developed as we expand our permanent workforce and recruit new consultants following retirements. We are reforming obstetric facilities on-site and expanding our main theatre suite with new expansion theatres (Elective Surgical Hub) and refurbishment of existing theatres. We are a supportive department looking for a long-term colleague who can bring their skills and attributes to the team.

Main duties of the job

The initial job plan involves a variety of specialties, especially major general/urology, orthopaedics/trauma surgery. Details will be negotiated upon appointment. Those with a specialist interest aligned with service development are encouraged to adapt their job plan as opportunities arise.

The post is based at Ipswich Hospital, with potential for sessions at Colchester Hospital in the future. It includes non-resident on-call duties in theatres and obstetric anaesthetic services at Ipswich.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification

Essential

• Full GMC registration with a license to practice
• On GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia or eligible within 6 months of interview
• FRCA or equivalent
• Technical skills in anaesthesia
• Experience in the NHS
• Team player
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience in teaching junior trainees or multidisciplinary teams
• Understanding NHS management structure

Desirable

• Current ALS and EPLS or APLS
• Instructor status in resuscitation courses
• Advanced training relevant to the proposed job plan
• Experience as an NHS consultant anaesthetist
• Willingness for additional responsibilities
• Strong positive teaching feedback
• Management training or qualifications
• Experience presenting QI work regionally or nationally
