What will I be doing as an apprentice?

As a Construction Materials Technician apprentice, you’ll be working in a laboratory environment that is hands-on and requires a willingness to get mucky. It’s not a sterile environment, so comfort with getting involved physically is essential.

You’ll be supported by existing apprentices and experienced materials technicians, learning on the job. This role offers practical experience that is often not available in traditional academic settings.

In the Holcim laboratory team, you’ll test construction materials like concrete, aggregates, and asphalt to ensure they are safe, reliable, and durable for long-term use.

No two days are the same; you’ll split your time between testing on-site, in the lab, and visiting various locations nearby, providing excellent opportunities for professional growth and networking.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Testing properties of construction materials such as concrete, aggregates, and asphalt.
  • Improving existing products by identifying and eliminating faults.
  • Implementing new technologies in materials testing, including automation and ergonomic equipment.
  • Understanding and applying non-destructive testing (NDT) methods.
  • Following safety and quality testing procedures to maintain accreditation.
  • Traveling to collect materials for testing.

Training and development will help you:

  • Complete a 21-month Level 3 apprenticeship.
  • Work safely and in accordance with procedures.
  • Test materials in labs and on-site according to standards.
  • Meet quality standards and deadlines.
  • Maintain equipment properly.
  • Communicate effectively with team members.
  • Attend training courses and keep records.

What could the future look like?

After completing the Level 3 apprenticeship, numerous career paths are available at Holcim and beyond, including roles such as:

  • Level 4/5 Technician Scientist
  • Senior Technician (average salary £29,015/year)
  • Materials Engineer (average salary £34,565/year)
  • Laboratory Manager (average salary £38,207/year)
  • Project Lead (with salary bonuses)

This apprenticeship also paves the way for further qualifications like a Level 6 BSc Apprenticeship, and opportunities to become a registered Science Technician (RSci Tech).

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

About You

We seek a focused, meticulous individual who is positive, proactive, and eager to learn. You should have a curious mind, be digitally savvy, confident in communication, and flexible to work outside regular hours including nights and weekends.

Note: A manual driving license and access to your own car are required due to the nature of the role.

Experience

We value the right attitude and aptitude over formal qualifications. Enthusiasm, honesty about your current knowledge, consideration, and eagerness to learn are key traits.

Qualifications

We are looking for motivated individuals interested in gaining new skills. If you already hold a Level 3 or higher qualification in a related field, or have substantial relevant experience, you may not be eligible for funding, as the program is designed for upskilling those needing it.

Applicants must be over 16, not in full-time education, have lived in the UK for 3 years, and have the right to work in the UK. If you don’t meet all criteria yet, express your interest, and we will contact you to discuss further.
