Job summary

United Utilities is offering a one-year Construction Co-ordinator intern position in Cumbria, based in Carlisle or Kendal. The role provides hands-on site experience with exposure to planning, safety, cost, and contractor management within our Construction Services team.

You will support relationships across the business, learn NEC4 practices, and gain practical skills for construction delivery in a live operational environment.

Qualifications

• Must be studying Engineering, Construction, Surveying or Architecture and expect a minimum 2:1 degree.
• Penultimate year of university required.
• Full UK driving licence (upon application) and vehicle access for business use.

Salary: At least £25,950 per annum (pro rata)
Location: Carlisle or Kendal
Hours: 37 hours per week

What can you expect as an Intern within our Construction Team?

Construction Services is part of the Construction, Commissioning & Integration Team, responsible for delivering projects from initial planning and design through to the safe and successful completion of physical assets. The team ensures all projects are delivered to the required quality standards while maintaining full legal and regulatory compliance on behalf of United Utilities as the Client Organisation.

As an intern, you will be encouraged to take a proactive approach to building relationships across the business and with our supply chain partners. You will gain valuable site-based and practical experience, developing an understanding of construction delivery within a live operational environment. Our portfolio includes a diverse range of construction projects, providing broad exposure to the water industry. To gain the maximum benefit from the placement, you will need to demonstrate a work ethic, curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn, supported by an open and inquisitive mindset.

You’ll be at the forefront of managing relationships with third parties and stakeholders, ensuring our projects are innovative, reliable, and cost-effective. Your role will involve providing crucial technical input on construction schedules, quality, safety, environment, and cost, ensuring projects are completed on time and within scope.

What you’ll be getting stuck into day to day:

• Ensuring projects follow our key principles.
• Managing relationships with contractors.
• Acting as the main point of contact for any issues that arise during construction
• Coordinating work between different teams to keep projects running smoothly.
• Supporting senior managers on more complex projects.
• Conducting regular safety and compliance checks on construction sites.
• Learning and applying the role of the Supervisor under NEC4 Contract.
• Carrying out on site inspections to ensure quality workmanship and compliance with company standards.

What you’ll bring to the team:

We require our interns to be expecting a minimum 2:1 degree in Engineering, Construction, Surveying or Architecture. You must be in your penultimate year of university study.

You will also need:

• Strong planning and organisational skills to keep projects on track.
• Excellent communication skills - both written and spoken.
• Able to demonstrate a practical application of your knowledge
• A proactive attitude with the ambition and drive to excel in a fast-paced environment.
• Flexible to work throughout the North West region
• Great team-working skills to thrive in an interdisciplinary setting.
• A full UK driving licence (upon application) and access to a vehicle for business use.
