Job summary

Lockheed Martin Ampthill is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist Miller to set up and operate high-precision CNC milling centers in an R&D–oriented shop. You will design machining processes, select tooling, write G-code, and oversee production of high-value, low-volume parts and one-offs.

The role also involves daily shop briefings, collaboration with engineering and tooling suppliers, mentoring apprentices, and driving continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent with relevant training.
  • Experience setting up and operating 3-5 axis CNC milling in a fast-paced R&D/production shop.
  • Ability to mentor apprentices and collaborate with engineering.

Ampthill, Bedfordshire, UK
£42,000- £45,000p/a + BUPA, benefits, bonus
37.5 hours per week with 4 day work week option

The role:

We are looking for a CNC Machinist Miller who will set and operate and maintain high‑precision CNC Milling machines in a fast‑paced, R&D‑oriented shop.

The ideal candidate will bring advanced milling and turning expertise whilst also being comfortable on multi‑axis milling centres.

You will design machining processes, select and optimize tooling, write G‑code, and oversee production of high‑value, low‑volume parts and one‑offs.

You will participate in daily shop briefings to discuss objectives, issues, and improvement ideas.

The role includes mentoring apprentices, collaborating closely with engineering and tooling suppliers, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Required skills:
  • Programming, set up, and running in multi-axis machining methods (3, 4 and 5axis).
  • Skilled in using Heidenheim and Fanuc and Siemans controls; Edit CNC programs, set fixtures and tooling, proving out and operating CNC multi‑axis machines to produce R and D and production component parts.
  • Making work offset, tooling and program adjustments as required.
  • Working to specifications, procedures and engineering drawings.
  • Inspecting produced parts using various measuring instruments and hand gauges and interprets CMM inspection results.
  • Supporting the development of machining processes and tooling/fixture design.
  • Liaising with engineering to improve machining methods.
  • Using problem solving techniques to solve machining and process related issues.
  • Prioritising workload to meet deliverable commitment timelines.
  • Experience of 6 S and lean manufacturing tools and techniques
Desired Skills
  • Experience and / or transferable skills to support Turning operations
  • Creating and refining machining strategies for R&D, prototype, and low‑volume production parts.
  • Producing accurate work instructions, process delineations, and change‑order documentation.
  • Implementing corrective action plans and track the effectiveness of process changes.
  • Coordinating with production planners to balance volume and turnaround requirements
Qualifications and Experience :

High School diploma, or equivalent experience/combined education, with additional specialized training in specific aspects of job functions and/or demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks and 3 Years of experience.
