Job description

Sunderland City Council's established Community Safety Service plays a key role in delivering our ambition for safer, stronger and more resilient neighbourhoods. We are looking for a highly organised, proactive and enthusiastic Community Safety Project Officer to join our Community Safety Strategy Team. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of community safety in Sunderland, supporting the delivery of the city's Community Safety Plan and the work of the Safer Sunderland Partnership. You will work alongside Council services and a wide range of partner agencies, helping to coordinate projects and initiatives that respond to community safety priorities and make a positive difference for residents and communities across the city. The role is varied and offers the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of community safety activity. One day you could be supporting a multi-agency review, the next analysing information to help identify emerging issues, preparing a report or briefing, coordinating a campaign, or working with our locality-based Community Safety Hubs and partners to progress local priorities.

  • Assist with multi-agency reviews, including ASB Case Reviews, Domestic Homicide Reviews and Offensive Weapon Homicide Reviews
  • Analyse and interpret data and information to support intelligence-led and evidence-based decision-making
  • Support the coordination and delivery of multi-agency projects, initiatives and action plans
  • Work with our locality-based Community Safety Hubs and partner agencies to support the delivery of local priorities
  • Maintain and update community safety content on the Council's website and social media platforms
  • Prepare reports, briefings, presentations and formal documentation for internal and external use
  • Support the planning and delivery of public engagement events, community safety campaigns and training sessions
  • Provide project, administrative and operational support to the Community Safety Service and Safer Sunderland Partnership
  • Support external funding returns, record keeping, performance monitoring and the tracking of actions and outcomes
We are looking for someone who is organised, enthusiastic and takes a proactive approach to their work. You will have a strong sense of public service and a genuine interest in improving community safety and the quality of life for people who live, work and visit Sunderland.
  • You will enjoy working collaboratively and be comfortable managing a varied workload and balancing competing priorities. You will need to communicate confidently and professionally with colleagues, partner agencies and communities, use information effectively, and exercise appropriate sensitivity and discretion when dealing with confidential or sensitive matters.
You will ideally have:
  • A relevant qualification or equivalent experience in public service, community safety, project coordination or a related field
  • Experience of supporting projects, multi-agency initiatives or operational activity, ideally within a public sector or partnership environment
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear and professional reports, correspondence and briefings
  • Confidence using digital platforms and tools to manage information, analyse data and support communications
  • A methodical and analytical approach, with the ability to interpret information and present findings clearly
  • The ability to work sensitively and professionally when dealing with confidential information and sensitive community safety matters
  • A strong commitment to equality, inclusion and positive engagement with Sunderland's diverse communities and stakeholders
Benefits:
  • Automatic enrolment into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), offering secure and flexible retirement benefits
  • Flexible working hours through our flexi-time scheme
  • You’ll receive 26 days annual leave (31 after 5 years’ continuous service), plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave through the Council’s flexible benefits scheme
  • Ongoing training, professional development and career progression opportunities
  • A supportive, collaborative and inclusive working environment where your contribution makes a difference
