Job description

The Diabetes Specialist Nurse will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the multi-professional team, patients, and carers within their Specialty Service. This role is primarily community-based.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have a responsibility to help develop the specialist area of practice in partnership with other members of the specialty team, working collaboratively to develop services and improve the quality of care delivered.

The post holder will carry responsibility for a defined caseload and offer specialist clinical and service support and advice, including setting standards of care, contributing to specific care guidelines, and supporting the care of patients across the health economy. The post holder will also have an active role in the education of patients, carers, and healthcare professionals in their area of expertise.

The post holder will contribute to achieving the objectives of the clinical service group/specialty corporate objectives and work within the clinical governance framework. This will be achieved through the core dimensions of the role: clinical practice, leadership, acting as the patient advocate, and through audit and education.

Education, Qualification, and Training
  • Registered Nurse
  • Non-medical prescribing
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • ENB998 or City & Guilds 730 or equivalent experience at level 3
  • Care support planning (or willing to work towards)
Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge
  • Ability to work with diverse client groups, especially those with mental health and social complexities
  • Proficiency in adult education techniques for group or individual education
  • Clear communication skills in English with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
Experience
  • Previous NHS experience in a diabetes environment
  • Experience with nonmedical prescribing in practice
  • Audit and research experience
  • Experience in teaching patients new skills
  • Supporting and teaching junior staff and students

Salary: £46,148 to £52,809 per annum, pro-rata.
