Job description

Senior Satellite Communications Systems Engineer

Location: Luton – Hybrid
Onsite: 1 day per week
Clearance: British Citizen or Dual National (eligible for UK Security Clearance)

The Opportunity:

A leading UK-based provider of advanced satellite communications and space solutions is seeking a Senior Satellite Communications Systems Engineer to support the design, development, and delivery of critical space-enabled systems.

Operating across defence, government, and commercial domains, this organisation plays a pivotal role in enabling secure global communications, navigation, and data services from space.

Role Overview:

Embedded in a highly skilled engineering team, you’ll work across the full system lifecycle—from concept and architecture through to integration and operational deployment. The role offers exposure to cutting-edge satellite technology and a variety of technical challenges across RF, payload, ground segment, and networking systems.

Responsibilities:

  1. Design and develop advanced SATCOM systems across space and ground segments
  2. Lead system-level requirements, architecture design, and interface definition
  3. Conduct RF link analysis, bandwidth planning, and coverage modelling
  4. Integrate IP networking, cyber security, and system monitoring features
  5. Support system integration, test planning, and verification & validation activities
  6. Interface directly with clients to shape mission requirements into engineered solutions
  7. Contribute to R&D efforts and technical strategy in the communications domain

Key Requirements:

  1. 5–10 years’ experience in SATCOM or space systems engineering
  2. Strong background in systems engineering (requirements, design, VV&T)
  3. Understanding of satellite system design, ground infrastructure, and payload engineering
  4. Familiarity with IP networking, data protocols, and secure comms environments
  5. Degree in Space Systems, Electronics, Communications, or related field
  6. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

Desirable:

  1. Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it)
  2. Experience in ground/satellite system commissioning and test
  3. Knowledge of OSS/BSS, network management, or secure architectures
  4. Software development exposure (Python, Java) and Agile/DevOps methodologies
  5. Familiarity with emerging tech such as optical communications, 5G, or quantum systems
