McLaren Applied is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join the Connected Intelligence team in London. You will work in a cross-functional group with data scientists, software engineers and test engineers to deliver cutting-edge automotive and motorsport analytics and connectivity solutions.

The role emphasizes learning, engineering excellence and collaboration across Linux, cloud and networking domains.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience in Linux environment
  • Understanding of TCP/IP fundamentals
  • Proficient in at least one OO language
  • Interest and ability to learn other languages
  • Fluent in written and spoken English

Responsibilities

Purpose of the Role You will become one of our key contributors who guide and foster innovation by developing leading edge products that span various market segments including transportation, automotive and motorsport. You will work collaboratively to solve interesting and challenging problems in a cross functional team with other engineering disciplines including Data Scientists, Simulation Engineers, Software Engineers, Test Engineers, System Reliability Engineers, Systems Engineers and Hardware Engineers.

Location

This role is based at our head office in central Woking. The role is included in our hybrid working policy with the expectation of a minimum of three days a week in the office, which should be co-ordinated with other members of the Engineering team.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experienced working in and developing for a Linux environment
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking fundamentals - the different protocol layers and what they're for, the basics of routing, flow control and congestion avoidance
  • Proficient in developing Object Orientated applications in at least one language
  • Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed
  • Ability to write and speak in English fluently
Desirable & Development Areas
  • Linux systems in C; familiar with the standard C and POSIX libraries including the socket API
  • Linux core tools; Bash, GCC, make and Git
  • Linux device driver or other kernel development experience, in particular working with the network stack
Networking Knowledge and Experience
  • Layer 1 and 2 networking knowledge: Ethernet, wireless protocols
  • Developing wireless devices: wireless network behaviour, basic protocol knowledge, measurement and testing of device performance
Cloud Software Development
  • Building products on cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Azure and GCP and micro services
  • Infrastructure as code (preferably Terraform and Terra grunt)
  • Containerization and container orchestration (preferably Docker and Kubernetes) and related managed services (e.g. EKS).
  • SQL and NoSQL databases
Database/application scaling, optimisation and monitoring
  • Message brokers such as Kafka and/or MQTT
  • Designing, developing and creating RESTful web services and APIs
  • CICD pipelines and test automation
  • Front-end technology (e.g. Angular, React, Django)
