Could you shape how audiences experience, understand and celebrate a landmark moment for the National Railway Museum?
About us
The Science Museum Group is here to inspire futures. As part of this strategic priority our communication teams have a critical role to play in increasing our reach, driving footfall and promoting our brand.
The National Railway Museum is entering a pivotal stage in its transformation programme, as a new welcome building, Central Hall and the new Railway Futures Gallery move towards opening. These landmark developments will reshape the museum's visitor experience, public profile and relationship with communities, stakeholders and partners.
To support this transformation programme, we are looking for a Communications Manager on a fixed term basis until January 2029. This is a full time role, 35 hours per week and can be based at either the National Railway Museum, York or Locomotion, Shildon.
About the role
As Communications Manager, you'll manage integrated communications through one of the most exciting chapters in the National Railway Museum's history - and celebrate its place at the heart of York Central, one of the UK's most significant cultural redevelopment programmes.
Your work will make sure the museum's transformation is understood, supported and celebrated, helping to secure lasting benefits for our audiences, our reputation and the wider organisation.
In collaboration with marketing, communications, visitor experience, and project teams, you'll create campaigns that generate excitement, support operational change, deepen stakeholder connections, and increase the value of major capital investment. Shaping visitor-facing marketing and communications is a big part of the role too, helping audiences navigate changing visitor journeys, operational developments and brand-new experiences.
This role follows a hybrid working pattern, offering the flexibility to work from home. Due to the nature of the position, an on-site presence is required at least three days a week, and more often when site-based activity requires it.
About you
By joining us, you are someone who enjoys connecting with people and developing lasting relationships. You'll bring extensive experience of developing and delivering integrated communications in a complex or changing environment, and a strategic, audience-focused approach that turns complex projects into clear, compelling messages. Your well-honed stakeholder engagement approach will enable you to collaborate effectively with senior leaders, partners, local residents, and community groups.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
What we offer
Open for All is one of the Science Museum Group's five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to develop a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge, and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation, capable to continue to Inspire Futures.
