Job description

High Voltage Commissioning Manager – Independent Power Producer

Commissioning Manager with an electrical bias and significant experience in 400KV High Voltage (HV) Transmission sought to join market leading Independent Power Producer. The organisation develops, builds, owns and operates a wide range of Energy Infrastructure including Battery Energy Storage (BESS), Hydro Power, Thermal Power, Hydrogen Production & Storage. With > £1Bn of Capital Expenditure for HV Transmission set to be constructed in-house through the next five plus years, we’re looking for a Commissioning Leader who can oversee everything HV related. Should it appeal, you could also lead overall Commissioning activities including the generation and storage assets.

Working directly for the client, you’ll be able to wear multiple hats simultaneously; Investor, Owner, Operator and Principal Contractor. This is a critical appointment where the Commissioning Manager will be a vital part of managing the complexity around connecting projects to the National Grid. You will be trusted to grow and expand the commissioning function, writing policies and procedures along with the variety of being on-site managing subcontractors. Ideally, you will have extensive knowledge of HV transmission processes, strong leadership capabilities, a technical background and the ability to manage stakeholders effectively.

High Voltage Commissioning Manager Responsibilities:

  • Lead commissioning activities for HV transmission projects, ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.
  • Manage the end-to-end commissioning process, including planning, execution, and integration into the National Grid.
  • Oversee third-party commissioning resources, providing direction and quality assurance.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for transmission operators, distribution network operators (DNOs), and other stakeholders.
  • Shape and develop the commissioning team to support project delivery.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety regulations, including NEBOSH/IOSH standards where applicable.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance, particularly in relation to HV transmission systems and interconnections.

High Voltage Commissioning Manager Requirements:

  • HNC or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in HV transmission, ideally with a background in National Grid (NGET), Scottish Transmission Operators (SSEN/SPEN), or a Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading commissioning activities for 400KV HV transmission projects.
  • Senior Authorized Person (SAP) or Authorizing Engineer status is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of frameworks and procedures related to National Grid and other transmission operators.
  • Formal health and safety qualifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) are a plus.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with the ability to navigate complex technical and regulatory environments.
  • A dynamic thinker with hands-on problem-solving capabilities.
