United Infrastructure Ltd is looking for a skilled and motivated Commissioning Engineer to support the delivery of electrical commissioning activities across DNO, ICP and wider infrastructure projects.
This is a hands-on, site-based role suited to an engineer with practical experience in electrical testing, commissioning, fault-finding and the safe delivery of LV and HV electrical infrastructure.
You will play a key role in ensuring electrical installations are tested, commissioned and handed over safely, efficiently and in accordance with the relevant technical standards.
Working alongside project managers, site teams, civil engineers and external stakeholders, you will support projects involving substations, switchgear, transformers, distribution networks and associated electrical infrastructure.
This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to critical UK infrastructure projects within a collaborative, delivery-focused business that values technical expertise, safety and professional development.
Key Responsibilities
Testing, Commissioning and Energisation
- Carry out and support testing and commissioning of LV and HV electrical systems and infrastructure.
- Undertake functional testing, inspections, fault-finding and verification of electrical installations.
- Support commissioning activities involving substations, switchgear, transformers, feeder pillars and associated cabling.
- Assist with energisation, outages and commissioning programmes in coordination with relevant network operators.
- Identify, investigate and resolve commissioning issues, ensuring equipment and installations meet the required technical standards.
- Prepare commissioning reports, test certificates, inspection records and handover documentation.
DNO / ICP Electrical Infrastructure
- Support commissioning and technical delivery across DNO, ICP and wider utility infrastructure projects.
- Ensure works comply with applicable DNO specifications, G81 requirements, BS standards and project-specific procedures.
- Liaise with DNOs, ICPs, clients and independent assessors to support inspections, testing, approvals and final acceptance.
- Interpret electrical drawings, schematics and technical specifications to ensure accurate commissioning and compliance.
- Support the completion of as-built records and technical documentation for network adoption and client handover, where applicable.
Site Delivery and Project Coordination
- Work closely with project managers, site supervisors, installation teams and civil engineering colleagues.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with installation programmes and wider project milestones.
- Identify technical issues, delays and interface risks, escalating where necessary to maintain programme delivery.
- Support site installation, temporary power arrangements and electrical infrastructure activities as required.
- Ensure commissioning activities are planned and delivered efficiently, with minimal disruption to project schedules.
Health, Safety, Environment and Quality
- Work in accordance with electrical safety rules, permits, isolation procedures and approved safe systems of work.
- Ensure risk assessments and method statements are followed throughout commissioning activities.
- Promote a strong safety culture and challenge unsafe practices on site.
- Maintain accurate technical records and support quality inspections, audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure electrical systems are tested, verified and handed over in a safe and compliant condition.
About You
You will be a practical, technically capable electrical engineer who enjoys working on site and taking responsibility for delivering safe, high-quality commissioning activities.
You will ideally have:
- Proven experience in electrical testing and commissioning within utilities, power distribution or infrastructure environments.
- Experience working on DNO and/or ICP projects.
- A sound understanding of LV and HV distribution systems, substations, switchgear, transformers and electrical cabling.
- Experience interpreting electrical drawings, schematics and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of G81 requirements, DNO standards and relevant electrical regulations.
- Experience using electrical testing equipment and producing commissioning documentation.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Experience coordinating with installation teams, civil contractors and project stakeholders.
- A proactive approach to health and safety, quality and technical compliance.
- Flexibility to travel nationally and work across multiple project sites.
Qualifications and Authorisations
- Relevant electrical engineering qualification or equivalent industry experience.
- HV/LV training or authorisations, with AP/SAP status desirable depending on the level of responsibility.
- ECS or CSCS card, or willingness to obtain one.
- Additional testing, commissioning or electrical safety qualifications would be advantageous.
Key Performance Indicators
Success in this role will be measured by:
- Safe and compliant completion of commissioning activities.
- Quality and accuracy of electrical testing and commissioning records.
- Compliance with DNO/ICP standards and project specifications.
- Successful support of energisation, handover and client acceptance.
- Effective coordination with installation, civil and project delivery teams.
