About the Role

We are hiring for a Commissioning Editor to join Springer Nature in either our London or Madrid office! In this role, you will commission and develop appropriate, profitable and quality ELT content (print or digital) from concept development through to publication as specified in the publishing plan. This involves commissioning authors and contributors and working closely with overseas markets, marketing, and the in-house or freelance project team to develop quality material that meets the needs of the key markets and is produced on schedule and within budget.

You will collaborate with the Publisher and Senior Commissioning Editor, as well as Product, Operations, Sales and Marketing, and Production stakeholders ensuring the publishing meets the needs of the key audience and is aligned with pre-press investment.

Role Responsibilities

1. Market awareness/research

• Work with relevant stakeholders to schedule and plan market research in line with the publishing plan.

Conduct market research

• Ensure the project meets the publishing vision and Macmillan business needs.

Keep up to date with other publishers’ material

• Assess potential impact on the publishing plan.

Content/material development (print/digital)

1. Work with relevant stakeholders to schedule and plan projects effectively.
2. Develop the concept of the course
3. Identify and commission authors and contributors
4. Work with authors and contributors to develop material
5. Ensure all briefing follows project specifications
6. Evaluate materials for quality and adherence to brief
7. Brief external content developers
8. Negotiate and administer content development contracts
9. Understand digital requirements and contribute to digital roadmap
10. Resource content development stages within budget
11. Utilize in-house and external resources for timely publication
12. Update Publisher on project progress
13. Follow content development procedures and guidelines
14. Implement corrections on backlist titles
15. Maintain high-quality author care

Budget/Financial Responsibility

1. Understand Investment Approval process
2. Prepare costings, forecasts, and business cases
3. Be aware of cost and schedule implications
4. Understand budgeting and financial impacts of changes

Staff Management

1. Manage performance, training, and development of staff

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Essential

• Degree or equivalent
• Formal ELT/TEFL qualification
• Knowledge of ELT markets
