Aberdeen City Council seeks a Commercial Solicitor to join its team. The successful applicant will provide high-quality legal services on commercial and procurement issues. The Commercial and Procurement service has an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor to join its Commercial Legal team. The successful applicant will advise in connection with contracts, grants and commercial matters, including public procurement advice across the Council. The applicant would ideally have experience of the areas of law that impact upon the Council.
Experience of working for a public sector organisation would be desirable as would the practical application of procurement law. However, a demonstrable willingness to learn shall be considered. The workload will be varied, challenging and interesting - you will make a positive difference to the lives of people in Aberdeen. You will be supported in a collegiate environment and encouraged to develop a full range of legal and other skills. The Commercial Legal team provides advice to the officers of the Council on procurement, construction (city centre, beach, schools and affordable housing), social care, and any matter that may involve the business of the Council. Drafting and Commercial skills are essential to this role.
Roles that require PVG Membership
Please note that with effect from 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be required to meet the cost of the PVG membership. This applies only to roles with a full time equivalent salary of £30,000 and above. (Teaching roles and jobs at Grade 11 and above (currently £30,285 per annum / £16.64 per hour)
The Council will pay for the PVG membership cost initially, either £18 for existing PVG scheme members, or £59 for non-members, and this cost will be deducted from an employee's first FULL month's salary payment.
Job purpose/about the role
As a Commercial Solicitor you will provide a professional and high quality legal service on commercial and procurement matters to the Council, and other bodies as authorised by the Council. In this role you will actively represent the Council's interests in legal matters whilst providing strategic advice and guidance on the potential lawful solutions to queries, including advice on managing risk.
