A leading company in Scotland is seeking a Commercial Manager for a fixed-term contract focused on business development and legal agreements in the energy sector. The role involves securing contracts, preparing proposals, and collaborating with various teams to support project delivery and growth of Scottish heat networks.
Job Description
This is a fixed-term contract for parental leave cover to bring expertise and capacity to our client's Scotland Business Development and Commercial Team. The role focuses on securing and closing commercial and legal agreements that enable the growth of our client's Scottish heat networks. It may also provide tactical support to the Head of Business Development and the wider team on other projects as required.
The Commercial Manager (CM) is responsible for providing commercial resources to support business growth, making recommendations to the Head of Business Development, and working within Project Teams to make risk-based commercial decisions to meet KPIs and contractual requirements.
This is a client-facing role requiring you to represent our colleagues with clients, customers, and joint venture partners. The CM will collaborate with colleagues from business development, engineering, and delivery to shape and deliver new district heating infrastructure projects, and support operational decisions regarding network expansions, grant applications, and pricing.
The CM will prepare high-quality bids and proposals, design and model commercial structures for each deal, lead negotiations to contract close, and manage contracts throughout project delivery.
You will support the Project Manager in guiding projects through internal governance processes. As a key team member developing our client's Scottish business, you will work with internal and external lawyers, Account Directors, Development Engineers, Engineering Managers, Analysts, and Project Managers to ensure smooth transitions from bidding to contract negotiation and project execution.
The role requires commercial acumen, risk management skills, financial rigor, and understanding of contract structures to capitalize on development opportunities. You will manage contracts up to and post-financial close, ensuring our client's risk is protected. Relevant contracts include Energy Services Agreements, Adoption Agreements, Plot Connection Agreements, Master Concession Agreements, Design Framework agreements, and supply chain contracts with design consultants, contractors, AMO providers, MBCS, and outsourcing suppliers.
Qualifications include a minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar role with demonstrated skills in commercial negotiation and financial modeling for major deals. Essential skills include financial planning and budgeting, interfacing between technical, commercial, operational, legal, and construction teams, managing projects under strict deadlines, strong communication, project management, multitasking, and attention to detail.
Desirable skills include understanding UK energy and property markets, delegation and supervision abilities, knowledge of district heating solutions, project delivery from concept to billing, and familiarity with building regulations.
