Job summary

Thatcher Associates seeks a Commercial Manager for civil engineering projects across Gloucestershire and the Midlands. You will lead a team of surveyors and own the commercial performance from tender to final account.

UK construction experience and NEC/JCT contract knowledge are essential. A driving licence is required to travel between sites and frameworks with major clients.

Qualifications

• Proven commercial management experience within civil engineering, ideally at principal contractor level in the UK.
• Strong working knowledge of NEC and/or JCT contract forms.
• Experience managing and developing a surveying team.
• Full UK driving licence for site travel across Gloucestershire and Midlands.
• Degree in quantity surveying, commercial management or related discipline; membership of RICS or CICES preferred.
• Right to live and work in the UK; UK construction experience required.

Responsibilities

• Lead commercial delivery across a portfolio of civil engineering projects, from tender through final account.
• Manage and develop a team of quantity surveyors.
• Oversee contract administration, risk management and dispute avoidance.
• Review and report on project cost, margin and cash position to senior management.
• Support bid and tender activity including commercial strategy and pricing review.
• Build and maintain client relationships across frameworks and repeat clients.

Commercial Manager, civil engineering (Gloucestershire)

The Opportunity:

An established civil engineering principal contractor working across the South West and Midlands, delivering infrastructure, highways, industrial and commercial, flood defence, and bridges and structures projects up to around 20 million. Their work spans local authority frameworks, national highways, and private sector clients, including major housebuilders.

They are looking for a Commercial Manager to take overall responsibility for the commercial performance of a portfolio of civil engineering projects, leading a team of surveyors and reporting directly into senior management. This is a role with genuine influence over how projects are commercially run, not just a reporting function.

What you will be doing:

• Leading commercial delivery across a portfolio of civil engineering projects, from tender through to final account
• Managing and developing a team of quantity surveyors
• Overseeing contract administration, risk management and dispute avoidance
• Reviewing and reporting on project cost, margin and cash position to senior management
• Supporting bid and tender activity, including commercial strategy and pricing review
• Building and maintaining strong client relationships across frameworks and repeat clients

What you will need:

• Proven commercial management experience within civil engineering, ideally at principal contractor level in the UK
• Strong working knowledge of NEC and/or JCT contract forms
• Experience managing and developing a surveying team
• Full UK driving licence, given travel across sites in Gloucestershire and the Midlands
• A degree in quantity surveying, commercial management or a related discipline is preferred, along with membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS or CICES.
