Job summary

Eversheds Sutherland in Cardiff is seeking a Commercial Finance Analyst to join the team responsible for P&L reporting, budgeting and performance analysis. You will deliver accurate dashboards, financial insights and management information to support strategic decision-making across the firm.

The role combines data analysis (70%) with core finance activities (30%), offering exposure to commercial projects and cross-function collaboration within a global law firm.

Qualifications

• Open to part-qualified ACCA/CIMA candidates.
• Preference for candidates with strong commercial finance and data analysis experience.
• A strong graduate with relevant analytical experience would be considered.
• Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of key deliverables.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.

Responsibilities

• Supporting month-end by making agreed accounting adjustments and supporting P&L reviews, plus producing monthly reporting packs, commentary and variance analysis.
• Owning assigned reporting deliverables, such as weekly and monthly KPI reporting, ensuring outputs are complete, accurate, validated and delivered on deadlines.
• Maintaining integrity of Fee Earner datasets and other key data sources on finance systems.
• Providing analytical support to Commercial Accountants and stakeholders, including ad-hoc data requests.
• Investigating and resolving queries in a timely manner, escalating risks or data issues.
• Contributing to annual budget and planning processes, including data input and analysis.
• Identifying opportunities to improve reporting processes while ensuring controls and output quality.
• Supporting the Commercial Accountants across a range of commercial projects.

The Team

The commercial finance team partners with business leaders and stakeholders across the firm, providing financial insight and commercial support to drive performance and informed decision-making. Our expertise spans budgeting and forecasting, management reporting, business cases and performance management. We work closely with practice groups to identify trends, risks and opportunities, helping to improve financial performance and deliver commercial objectives.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of three experienced commercial accountants, providing high-quality management information, analysis and insight to two practice areas within the business. The commercial finance analyst plays a key role in transforming data into meaningful insight to support effective business partnering and enable strategic decision‑making across the firm.

Role Overview

You will be supporting our Commercial Advisory and Corporate Finance practice groups, this role combines financial analysis with commercial insight. You'll take ownership of reporting, systems and data production, delivering accurate and actionable insights to support decision‑making. Responsibilities include P&L reporting, budgeting, review packs, promotions and quarterly reporting, with a strong emphasis on data analysis (70%) alongside core finance activities (30%).

Key Responsibilities

• Supporting the month‑end by making agreed accounting adjustments and supporting with P&L reviews, as well as producing monthly reporting packs, commentary and variance analysis.
• Taking ownership of assigned reporting deliverables, such as weekly and monthly KPI reporting for the business, ensuring outputs are complete, accurate, validated and delivered to agreed deadlines.
• Maintaining the integrity of Fee Earner datasets and other key data sources on finance systems.
• Providing analytical support to Commercial Accountants and business stakeholders, including ad‑hoc requests for data or analysis as needed.
• Investigating and resolving queries in a timely manner, escalating risks, data issues or delays at the earliest opportunity.
• Contributing to annual budget and planning processes, including inputting data and supporting analysis.
• Identifying practical opportunities to improve reporting processes, while ensuring stakeholder requirements, controls, testing and output quality are maintained.
• Supporting the Commercial Accountants across a range of commercial projects as required.

Candidate Profile

• Open to part‑qualified ACCA/CIMA candidates
• Preference for candidates with strong commercial finance and data analysis experience rather than a purely accounting‑focused background
• A strong graduate with relevant analytical experience would be considered
• Proactive and self‑motivated, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of key deliverables.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality work.
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
• Confidence working with large data sets, reporting tools and financial systems to generate meaningful insights and support decision‑making.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a focus on continuous improvement and process efficiency.
