Job summary

Cosworth Ltd in Northampton is seeking a CNC Setter Operator to set and run CNC machines, ensuring high-quality components are produced safely and efficiently in line with company standards.

The role requires reading technical drawings, working with Fanuc-based controls, selecting tools, and inspecting outputs. You will contribute to continuous improvement, maintain clean work areas, and communicate issues promptly to Team Leaders.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read/interpret technical drawings.
  • Experience with Fanuc-based machines (Hitachi Seiki, Matsuura).
  • Problem solving and identifying NC code errors.
  • Knowledge of work-holding, tool selection and cutting parameters.
  • Awareness of shop-floor computer systems and quality principles.
  • Automotive/engineering background preferred.

Job Description

The CNC Setter Operator is responsible for setting and operating CNC machining equipment to produce high-quality precision components safely, efficiently, and in line with company standards. The role requires a strong understanding of machining processes, technical drawings, tooling, inspection methods, and continuous improvement principles. Working as part of the production team, the CNC Setter Operator will ensure manufacturing targets are achieved while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and operational excellence.

The Role
  • To set and operate machines in a safe manner with regard to themselves and others, complying with the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • To produce components to the company standard in the most efficient / cost effective manner.
  • To be familiar with all systems and procedures of their job.
  • Ensure that information is transferred between shifts and team members as required.
  • If problems occur ensure the relevant people are kept informed e.g. Team Leader, Shift Leader, Production Engineer, Scheduler & Maintenance.
  • Be committed to continuous improvement and suggest improvements regarding methods, processes and tooling.
  • To highlight problems as soon as they occur to the Team Leader / Shift leader.
  • Keep working area clean and tidy.
  • Work within departmental / company procedures.
  • In addition to the above, fulfil any other reasonable requirement consistent with departmental objectives.
Candidate Profile
  • Ability to read, interpret and communicate technical information and drawings.
  • Experience of Fanuc based machines such as Hitachi Seiki and Matsuura.
  • Ability to problem solve and see errors in NC code
  • Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of:
    • Work-holding methods.
    • Tool selection criteria.
    • Cutting tool parameters.
    • Manual machining techniques.
    • Shop floor computer systems.
    • Quality principles.
    • Inspection techniques.
  • Knowledge of Machine tooling, Backends & Sharps.
  • Knowledge of tool measuring equipment such as Zoller
  • Basic numerical and computer skills.
  • Change oriented and keen to promote forward thinking.
  • Effective communicator both verbal and written.
  • Committed and enthusiastic.
  • Automotive/engineering experience/background.
  • Knowledge of machining engine components preferred (Heads, Blocks, Cams & Cranks, etc.)
  • Keisan, 5s, 6Sigma and SMED.
