Heritage is for everybody, and we are here for heritage.

Heritage lives in places and people, memories and stories, artefacts and traditions. It can connect us all to the past, and to each other. It can make us happier, strengthen every community, and help shape society for the better. Everybody should be able to enjoy the benefits it brings.

That's why, as a charity, we care for over a million objects and hundreds of historic sites in every part of England, from international icons to local treasures. And it's why we open them up, share their stories and find new ways for everybody to enjoy, learn, play and create.

We're the organisation that looks after England's most important buildings and monuments, making sure our country's amazing history is available for everyone to enjoy. From world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, Roman forts to a Cold War bunker, we bring the history of England to life.

Hadrian's Wall is Britain's most impressive and most important Roman monument and a World Heritage Site, stretching for 73 miles from Wallsend in the east to the Solway Firth in the west, with its fortifications continuing down the Cumbrian coast to Ravenglass.

We are looking for a site-based Cluster Manager to join our team on a permanent basis, working 36 hours per week. This is an incredible leadership opportunity for someone who is looking for the next step in their management career where you will support, develop and inspire an established management team at Carlisle Castle, Birdoswald Fort, Housesteads Fort, Chesters Fort and Corbridge Roman Town, plus the Hadrian's Wall F&B Manager and Visitor Welcome Manager.

The Benefits
  • Salary from £39,855 - £43,087 p.a, depending on skills and experience
  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, pro rata, rising to 28 days after 3 years
  • Matched pension contributions up to 10%
  • Flexible hours
  • The opportunity to progress your career within the heritage sector
  • Subscriptions to professional bodies
  • Free access to all English Heritage sites for you and up to six friends and family members
  • 25% discount in our shops and cafes
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity or shared parental leave
  • Options to buy additional leave
  • An inclusive working atmosphere everybody is supported from all backgrounds, religions and with different needs
  • Opportunities to go to some of our great live music and history events

Collectively, the Wall sites welcome around 250,000 visitors a year, making it one of English Heritage's most significant sites. You will be responsible for a team of around 50 FTE staff plus volunteers and for delivering c.£2.4 million income while managing an expenditure budget of c.£1.8 million p.a. You will be expected to manage many stakeholders across the Wall and collaborate with multiple partners and local authorities along the Wall.

This is an exciting time to be leading the Hadrian's Wall team, as we are developing multi-million-pound funding bids for investment at our sites along the Wall. You will be acting as the Operational Client on the Project Board, playing a critical role in the successful delivery of projects and maximising their benefits.

You will manage a high-volume visitor operation, leading a dispersed team in the delivery of consistent standards and generating profit by meeting revenue targets, controlling costs and delivering a unique and memorable visitor experience. You will maintain and develop a safe and welcoming environment to support the delivery of positive, rewarding and memorable experiences for our staff, volunteers and visitors alike.

You will oversee and lead your management team in the day-to-day management of their sites - providing support, direction and guidance in order that all important financial and compliance targets are met whilst also ensuring our sites are both enjoyable and inclusive places to work and visit.

To be a successful Cluster Manager you will need :
  • to be an effective communicator with the confidence and ability to represent your sites.
  • to be committed to continuous personal development.

  • developing new ideas and ways of working) and empowerment (how
  • you make decisions and get things done)
