Job summary

IBM Software in the United Kingdom seeks a Backend Engineer to help design and build cloud-native services powering Confluent Cloud components. You will work with modern cloud technologies, contribute to robust backend systems, and collaborate with experienced engineers across teams.

You will design, implement, test, and deploy services, troubleshoot issues, and participate in code reviews. A Master’s degree is preferred and strong skills in Java, Go, C/C++, or Python are valued for driving

Qualifications

• Experience developing backend software in a production or professional environment.
• Proficient in at least one major language (Java/Go/C/C++, Python) and REST APIs.
• Strong fundamentals: testing, code reviews, debugging and documentation.
• Familiarity with cloud-native apps, microservices and distributed systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues and collaborate across teams.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend services delivering value to customers.
• Work with senior engineers on scalable, reliable services.
• Troubleshoot issues across microservices, containers, and cloud infra.
• Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and participate in reviews.
• Contribute to documentation and technical discussions.
• Support deployment, monitoring, and operation of production services.
• Collaborate across teams to deliver projects and resolve challenges.
• Learn and contribute to improvements in service reliability and performance.
