Job description

The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine is seeking to recruit a part-time Clinician in Anaesthesia to deliver an efficient and effective anaesthesia service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal and Equine Hospital.

Job Purpose

To deliver an efficient and effective anaesthesia service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal and Equine Hospital. To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, clinical scholars and to undertake clinical research/scholarship within the anaesthesia service thereby contributing to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

• 1. To provide a high-quality an anaesthesia service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities.
• 2. To support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.
• 3. To contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.
• 4. To participate in the out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover is available for the provision of direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.
• 5. To support the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars, by supervision of clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.
• 5. To participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to anaesthesia area at national and international level as appropriate.
• 6. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.
• 7. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.

For appointment at Grade 8:

Teaching:

• 8. To engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.
• 9. To contribute to the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
• 10. To engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, (using a variety of methods and techniques) and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

For appointment at Grade 8:

Clinical Research/Scholarship:

• 11. To collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation and develop a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed clinical journals and/or textbooks.
• 12. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences within the service area.

For appointment at Grade 8:

Administration:

• 13. To develop material to promote the anaesthesia service both at conferences and electronically.
• 14. To undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division. To contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with university strategy.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

• A1Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
• A2 Completion of recognised residency training programme.
• A3ECVAA/ACVAA Diploma or RCVS CertAVP in anaesthesia

Desirable:

• B1PhD (or other evidence of research training).
• B2 Hold a relevant teaching qualification.
• B3 Ability to implement and run own residency research project and supervise ECVAA training.

Skills

Essential:

• C1High standard of communication skills both orally and written.
• C2Ability to work as part of a team.
• C3Competence across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.

For appointment at Grade 8:

• C7 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.

• C9 Ability to supervise PGR and residency students.

Desirable:

• D1 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.
• D2 Leadership of a clinical or teaching team.

Experience

Essential:

• E1 Postgrad clinical experience in anaesthesia speciality.
• E2 Evidence of clinical publications.

For appointment at Grade 8:

• E3 An established reputation as an advanced clinician in small animal anaesthesia service.

Desirable:

• F1Teaching or training experience at undergraduate level.
• F2 Ability to create and/or run a specialist clinic.
• F3 Evidence of peer reviewing scholarly outputs.
• F4 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.
• F5 A track record of clinical research publications.
• F6 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8, £41,064 - £46,049/£50,253 - £58,225 per annum pro rataplus out of hours allowance and generous clinical supplement

This post is part-time(equivalent to 24.5 hours per week but may be arranged in blocks)and open ended.
