Job summary

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Jackie Walton Vascular Studies Unit seeks a Band 7 Clinical Vascular Scientist to independently perform, interpret and report complex vascular ultrasound investigations, using advanced duplex ultrasound to support diagnosis and management.

You will contribute to MDT discussions, provide expert clinical advice, and help shape patient care pathways while mentoring trainees and engaging in research and service development.

Qualifications

• SVT-accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist with Band 7 level of responsibility.
• Independent performance, interpretation and reporting of complex vascular ultrasound.
• Ability to provide expert clinical advice and participate in MDT discussions.

Responsibilities

• Perform and report a wide range of specialized vascular investigations, primarily duplex ultrasound.
• Assess and monitor arterial and venous disease across multiple regions.
• Communicate findings to referrers and escalate urgent cases.
• Explain results to patients with sensitivity and clarity.
• Lead and mentor trainees and STP students in vascular diagnostics.
• Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and service development.
• Support outreach clinics across Thames Valley region.

Job description

Are you an experienced, SVT-accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist seeking your next challenge in a nationally recognised vascular service? Join the Jackie Walton Vascular Studies Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, and help deliver specialist vascular diagnostics across the Thames Valley. As a Band 7 Clinical Vascular Scientist, you will independently perform, interpret and report a broad range of complex vascular ultrasound investigations, using advanced duplex ultrasound and other diagnostic modalities to support diagnosis and management. You will provide expert clinical advice, contribute to MDT discussions and help shape patient care pathways. Alongside clinical practice, you will develop through audit, quality improvement, research, innovation, teaching and service development. Oxford offers opportunities to contribute to research, publications and funding applications, and to support service improvements. You will work closely with vascular surgeons, radiologists and the wider multidisciplinary team, while supporting trainee Clinical Vascular Scientists and other healthcare professionals. The role offers opportunities to develop leadership skills and progress towards senior roles. We welcome enthusiastic, motivated applicants who can work autonomously, communicate complex findings confidently and demonstrate excellent clinical judgement and commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care., As a Clinical Vascular Scientist (Band 7), you will play a key role in delivering a specialist vascular diagnostic service, working autonomously to assess, diagnose and support the management of patients with vascular disease.,

• Performing and independently reporting a wide range of highly specialised vascular investigations, primarily using duplex ultrasound.
• Assessing and monitoring patients with arterial and venous disease affecting the lower limbs, upper limbs, abdomen and neck.
• Communicating findings to referring clinicians and ensuring urgent cases are escalated appropriately.
• Discussing scan results with patients in a sensitive and compassionate manner, including when findings may have significant implications for patient care.
• Participating in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and contributing expert vascular diagnostic advice.
• Supporting the day-to-day management of the Vascular Studies Unit, including prioritisation of referrals and workload planning.
• Providing leadership and deputising for the Chief Vascular Scientist when required.
• Training, supervising and mentoring trainee Clinical Vascular Scientists, STP trainees and other healthcare professionals.
• Contributing to research, audit and service development activities to enhance patient care and improve service delivery.
• Supporting outreach clinics across the Thames Valley Vascular Network, requiring travel to other sites within the region.
