Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Haematology nurse to join and support the Haematology Practice Educator based on the Bud Flanagan Unit. The post holder will help facilitate education and training, working across the Bud Flanagan Unit. The Bud Flanagan Unit is the main Haemato-oncology and Stem Cell Transplant wards caring for patients undergoing high dose chemotherapy treatment, stem cell transplantation and other cellular therapy products including clinical trials which requires all nursing and HCSWs to have a high level of clinical expertise.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and experienced, who enjoys education and working with nurses to increase their knowledge to ensure a high quality service. You must be able to demonstrate good communication skills, reliability and have an organised approach.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide clinical support to the Haematology Practice Educator and wider nursing team that is motivating and supportive resulting in high quality and evidence-based patient care.
  • To assist in, facilitate and ensure clinical staff are equipped with the core nursing skills to be able to facilitate different treatment modalities including IV, Blood Transfusion, V&C, SACT, Transplant, Cellular Therapy and Clinical Trials.
  • To assist in supporting JACIE accreditation objectives for staff.
  • To support student nurses and NQNs in the clinical environment.
  • The post holder will support internal study days, work collaboratively with Practice Educators, Ward Managers, participate and support clinical audits and quality improvement projects or unit initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and maintaining high standards of care.

  • Maintain clinical practice by working within the clinical area and supporting colleagues on the Bud Flanagan Unit.
  • To provide skilled care and expertise in core nursing skills and Haematology nursing.
  • To provide education to patients on the care and management of side effects of treatment, symptom control and discharge.
  • To be knowledgeable of treatment options and be able to educate patients, carers and the staff.
  • To support research nurses in the care of patients undergoing clinical trials and adhere to the principle of informed consent and advocacy.
  • Administer medicines as prescribed with adherence to Guidelines & Policies for Medicines Administration.

Education/Qualifications
  • NMC Registration
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in Haemato-Oncology nursing
  • Professional Nurse Advocate
Experience
  • Competent in Intravenous Drug Administration and experience of being an assessor.
  • Competent in Blood Administration and experience of being an assessor.
  • Competent in Chemotherapy Administration and experience of being an assessor.
  • Competent in Venepuncture/ Cannulation and experience of being an assessor.
  • Experience and competence in handling and administering Cryopreserved products.
  • Experience in administering different treatment modalities including clinical trials
  • Evidence of assessing and supporting learners in practice on inpatient or outpatient departments.
  • Evidence of working cooperatively in a team
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills
  • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise.

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
