Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference to people living with dementia in Leeds. The post is a development post and post holder will be supported to develop to an 8a including access to training in supervision skills, within two years. There is ample opportunity to develop clinical leadership skills and to be involved in ongoing development projects.

There has been psychological provision to the two dementia wards in Leeds for many years and this is a recent increase in funding reflecting the value placed on the contribution from psychological professionals. The wards work to a model of delivering person centred care. The frameworks used include both CLEAR and the Newcastle formulation model. The ward teams are made up of different disciplines and work closely together around a shared care plan. The psychologist on the ward contributes to making sense of peoples behaviours, and uses the formulation process to identify needs in order that least restrictive practice is required and that service users are discharged back home or to a suitable place of care. They offer one to one interventions, risk assessments, liaise with family members to gather more history and are available for time limited support to family if required.

There are two wards, one female and one male and time will be divided between them. The post holder will work regular working hours between Monday and Friday.

Main duties of the job

1. To deliver a high quality psychological service to the inpatient wards for people with dementia at the Mount.
2. To assess, observe and gather relevant history of service users.
3. To facilitate formulations and contribute to and direct the care and treatment plan.
4. To engage with service users, offering psychological interventions as required and supporting staff to attend to the psychological needs of the people admitted to the ward and address the needs of those with behaviours that challenge.
5. To deliver training as required to other professionals on the ward.
6. To attend MDTs and work closely with professional colleagues to enhance the care plans and deliver high quality care.
7. To develop skills in supervision in order to support trainees and other staff.
8. To contribute to service development, including the model of clinical care, keeping abreast of the national direction through FPOP workstreams.
9. To take part in and lead on audits as required.
10. To demonstrate compassion for colleagues and service users.
11. To support family members to adjust to the needs of the person with dementia.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There are a range of psychological professionals working across the Older Peoples Services in Leeds and the professional group work closely together across the older peoples’ pathways. We have good working relationships with our operational colleagues and other leaders. We have good access to supervision, and strong links to the D. Clin Psych course in Leeds. CPD activities are supported.

The Psychological Professions workforce across the Trust is supported by a part time Deputy Director of Psychological Professions and two part time Professional Leads.

We are committed to robust professional leadership, equality, diversity and inclusion and supporting staff wellbeing and CPD. Our previous Psychological Professions Strategy was achieved and we are in the process of writing a new strategy.

The post holder will be delivering person centered dementia care and support staff to deliver high quality interventions. The post is within regular working hours and does not include weekends or bank holidays.

There is ample opportunity to be involved in teaching. The post involves working with families who need support in context of the challenges and changes and loss they are facing.

The post holder is not required to drive.

The post is 30 hours per week.

Qualifications

• Doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or equivalent prior to 1996)
• HCPC registration

Knowledge

• Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies used to treat the population of service users specified in the job summary. Eg dementia care and behaviours that challenge and recent guidelines.
