Join a leading healthcare organization in Chelmsford as a Clinical Fellow in Adult Critical Care. You'll work alongside experienced consultants to provide high-quality care to critically ill patients, engaging in both practical procedures and administrative tasks. This role offers a vibrant environment for professional growth and collaboration across multiple hospital sites.
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest trusts in the country, serving a population of 1.2 million people with acute hospital sites at Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon, and Southend.
We are a well-led, high-performing, and innovative organization committed to providing the best healthcare services for our local population and working in the best interests of the people we serve.
This is an exciting time to join the MSE group, which comprises three hospitals under one Trust board: Basildon Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, and Southend Hospital.
Adult critical care at Mid & South Essex is a vibrant community of five units across three geographical sites, each with a distinct profile but a shared culture. It is managed in an autonomous directorate overseeing approximately 46 level 3 beds (with a flexible mix of level 3 and level 2) and over 2,500 admissions annually.
You will work under the direction of the duty Critical Care Consultant to deliver care to patients referred and admitted to the Critical Care unit. Responsibilities include participating in safety huddles, handovers, consultant ward rounds, reviewing critical care patients, and ward work as directed. This involves ordering investigations, chasing results, performing practical procedures, and handling administrative tasks such as referrals, communications, discharge summaries, and transfer letters.
Your role includes reviewing referred patients, presenting cases to the consultant, and initial stabilization and management of critical care patients. Procedures may include emergency intubation, tracheostomy management, insertion of intercostal drains, central venous and arterial cannulation, setting up invasive ventilation, troubleshooting, and administering vasoactive medications and IV fluids.
With around 15,000 staff, we aim to deliver excellent local and specialist services, improve patient health and well-being, and provide a vibrant environment for staff development, innovation, and career growth.
Patients will benefit from improved care, fewer delays, and access to region-wide specialist services. Our new size offers more opportunities for research, networking, and specialist recruitment, helping us become the best we can be.
