Job description

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest trusts in the country, serving a population of 1.2 million people with acute hospital sites at Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon, and Southend.

We are a well-led, high-performing, and innovative organization committed to providing the best healthcare services for our local population and working in the best interests of the people we serve.

Job overview

This is an exciting time to join the MSE group, which comprises 3 hospitals under one Trust board: Basildon Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, and Southend Hospital.

Adult critical care at Mid & South Essex is a vibrant community of 5 units across three geographical sites, each with a distinct profile but a shared culture. The directorate manages the equivalent of 46 level 3 beds (a flexible mix of level 3 and level 2) with over 2500 admissions annually.

Main duties of the job

You will work under the supervision of the duty Critical Care Consultant to deliver care to patients referred and admitted to the Critical Care unit. Responsibilities include participating in safety huddles, handovers, consultant ward rounds, reviewing patients, and performing practical procedures such as ordering investigations, procedures, and administrative tasks like making referrals, communicating with other specialties, and preparing discharge summaries and transfer letters.

Your role involves reviewing referred patients, presenting cases to the consultant, and initial stabilization and management, including emergency intubation, tracheostomy management, insertion of intercostal drains, central and arterial cannulation, setting up invasive ventilation, troubleshooting, and administering vasoactive medications and fluids.

Working for our organization

With approximately 15,000 staff, we aim to deliver excellent local and specialist services, improve patient health and well-being, and provide a vibrant environment for staff development, innovation, and career growth.

Patients will benefit from improved care, fewer delays, and cancellations. Our expanded size allows region-wide specialist care, more development opportunities, and increased recruitment of specialist staff.
