Job summary

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is inviting applications for a Clinical Fellow in Prenatal/Clinical Genetics in the Department of Clinical Genetics. The post is fixed term for 6 months and commences on 01/02/2027.

Clinical Fellow in Prenatal/Clinical Genetics

We are inviting applications to fill our Prenatal Clinical Fellow vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Department of Clinical Genetics. This post will ideally commence on 01/02/2027 and is fixed term for 6 months.Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job

This post is suitable for doctors from a range of specialties and can be tailored to the successful applicants training needs. It would be particularly well suited to doctors already training in clinical genetics who wish to strengthen their experience in prenatal and postnatal genetics. We also welcome applications from doctors training in obstetrics who have an interest in fetal medicine, and from those in other specialties, such as paediatrics, who are considering a career in clinical genetics.Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

You will join a large clinical genetics service with an established prenatal team comprising consultants, residents and clinical fellows, genetic counsellors, and genomic practitioners. We work well together. We also work collaboratively with our genetics laboratory, local fetal medicine colleagues, and obstetric and midwifery teams across the region. We serve a diverse population of 4 million, holding 2 clinics per week for our prenatal and postnatal patients. Our patient population, from a variety of socio-demographic backgrounds, includes families with multiple diagnoses and at times raises challenging ethical scenarios.

Working within the prenatal clinical genetics team, you will be involved in direct patient care in clinic and at key stages throughout the clinical pathway. You will also contribute actively to our prenatal and fetal medicine multidisciplinary team meetings. Your responsibilities and training will be tailored to your previous experience and current learning requirements. If you are already training in clinical genetics, we will support your continued development, including completion of the relevant decision aid and curriculum requirements for your training year.

The post also offers the opportunity to gain experience within a large clinical genetics service. Although the role is primarily focused on prenatal work, there may be scope to work in other areas of the service where this would support your training and development.

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor who enjoys patient-facing work, contributes positively to a team, and is motivated to develop their knowledge and skills. You will be organised, able to manage competing priorities, and capable of working independently when appropriate. Previous experience in clinical genetics, obstetrics or paediatrics would be advantageous.

Excellent communication skills are essential. You will need to communicate clearly and sensitively with patients in clinic and produce accurate, well-written correspondence. You will also work closely with colleagues in the prenatal team, administrative support staff, laboratory teams, fetal medicine services and other departments. The role requires effective communication in person, by video call and telephone, and through letters and emails.

Patient safety is fundamental to this role. You will receive supervision and support appropriate to your previous experience, and you will be expected to recognise the limits of your competence, seek advice when needed, and practise safely at all times.
