Job summary

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is recruiting a number of permanent Band 6 Health Science Practitioner specialists (Senior Genetic Technologist) to work at NEY GLH Central Laboratory based at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds.

Applicants should have a Biological Science degree with Genomics/Molecular Biology content, at least 3 years relevant experience, and registration with AHCS or HCPC as Genetic Technologist or Biomedical Scientist.

Qualifications

• First degree in Biological Science with Genomics/Molecular Biology content.
• Registration with AHCS or HCPC as Genetic Technologist or Biomedical Scientist is required.
• At least 3 years of relevant experience; ideally in a diagnostic laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Work 37.5 hours per week full-time and participate in out-of-hours rotas including weekends and bank holidays.
• Deliver accurate genomic testing and ensure timely reports under tight deadlines.
• Communicate effectively with team members and provide high-quality laboratory support.

In response to NHS Englands recent Strategy and Service Specification for the future of Genomics services in England, Newcastle Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Childrens Trust and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have formed the North East and Yorkshire Genomics Laboratory Hub; an exciting collaboration to provide services for Genomics across Yorkshire and Humber and the North. The combined size of our geography makes this the largest collaboration in the country with the Trusts offering a range of both general and specialist hospital services with excellent clinical outcomes for patients. We have an international reputation for excellence in specialist care, research and academic training.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a number of permanent Band 6 Health Science Practitioner specialists (Senior Genetic Technologist) to work at North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH) Central Laboratory based at St Jamess University Hospital in Leeds:Applicants should have a first degree in a Biological Science subject with a considerable Genomics or Molecular Biology content, at least 3 years relevant experience; ideally in a diagnostic laboratory and have completed registration with the AHCS or HCPC as a Genetic Technologist or Biomedical Scientist. Experience of service development and troubleshooting and/or management experience including attendance management and procurement would be an advantage.The successful candidate will need to work in a fast-paced environment, completing work at short notice and delivering the tight deadlines. This role requires excellent communication skills, good manual dexterity and a high level of attention to detail. By working to strict deadlines within established systems and procedures, the successful applicant will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, technical skill and flexibility. The post holder should have the ability to use their initiative and be able to work independently and as part of a team.The post holder will be required to work 37.5 hours per week full-time and contribute to out-of-hours rotas including weekends and bank holidays as required.
