NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is seeking a Section Manager for the Medical Equipment Management service based at New Victoria Hospital. The role oversees a team of clinical engineer technologists, ensuring high safety governance and compliance under ISO 55001, with a Monday–Friday, 36-hour week in a permanent contract.

You will lead complex repairs, contribute to procurement projects, and develop technical competency across a wide range of advanced medical devices.

Qualifications

• Engineering knowledge at SCQF Level 11 or higher.
• Masters level experience with medical equipment and manufacturer courses.
• Strong understanding of technical and clinical risks across equipment.
• Knowledge of clinical, scientific and engineering principles for complex devices.

Responsibilities

• Governance and safety for medical equipment within the MEM system for the team.
• Lead procurement and evaluate new equipment; obtain quotes.
• Manage safety alerts, field notices, and incident investigations.
• Oversee planned maintenance and external maintenance contracts.
• Develop and approve Core Procedures, SOPs, and local policies.
• Schedule maintenance, prioritise requests, and drive service improvements.

Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The Role

Medical equipment is used for medical treatment and diagnosis of patients in all areas of a hospital and beyond. Having fully functional and accurate medical equipment is essential for the safe diagnosis and treatment of patients, and it is the Medical Equipment Management service that is responsible for that equipment.

The Medical Equipment Management service is a team of highly trained clinical engineer technologists who are experts on medical equipment. We work across ten hospital sites in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, managing the full life cycle of over 55,000 medical equipment devices, completing over 60,000 jobs per year.

You will work as the Section Manager, leading a team of clinical engineer technologists based in the New Victoria Hospital. You will have a permanent contract with a working week that is Monday to Friday.

You will lead the team ensuring that all work is completed to the highest safety and governance standards, advising on highly complex repairs, and work with the team to develop their technical competency. Every day is different, you will have an opportunity to work on service development, to participate in medical equipment procurement projects, always working within the established ISO 55001 asset management system.

You will work with a wide range of medical devices including specialist and highly complex equipment. You will receive both manufacturer and in-house specialist training, to maintain your skills to enable you to contribute to all stages of the medical device life cycle.

All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

• Location based in New Victoria Hospital, G42 9LL
• Full-time position (36 hours per week)
• Permanent Contract
• Shift pattern for this post are Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 16:12 (30 mins lunch)

Key Responsibilities

• Medical device governance and safety: being responsible for the governance and safety of medical equipment on the Medical Equipment Management system for their team, including advising clinical staff on all matters relating to the use of highly complex medical equipment.
• Procurement: participate in the formal evaluation of new medical equipment and provide leadership on specific medical equipment capital replacement programmes. Give advice to clinical staff and obtain quotes for medical equipment.
• Safety alerts/field safety notices: for their service area manage the implementation and response to safety action notices, safety alerts, field safety notices, etc.
• Incident investigation: manage the technical investigation of medical device clinical incidents, or other hazardous events, near misses involving medical equipment managed by the service.
• Planned maintenance: manage the planned maintenance programme for their service area, highlighting any deviance from the GGC programme.
• External maintenance contracts: oversee the operation of external maintenance contracts for medical equipment within the service. Liaising, where appropriate, with manufacturers, their agents, or others. Check contract equipment lists for accuracy and correct levels of cover with the MEM contract management team. Approve and sign off contract visits, and service reports.
• Record keeping: ensure they and their team maintain accurate and contemporaneous records on the Medical Equipment Management System in accordance with the Asset Management System policies and clinical governance requirements.
• Lead the development, authoring and final approval of Core Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, local policies and protocols within the service, ensuring that they meet the requirements of the Asset Management System.
• Responsibility for the work and the priorities of the section by scheduling planned preventative maintenance, prioritising breakdown requests, and assigning work to technical staff. 16. Suggest, lead and implement service improvements to work processes and medical device management.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

• Masters level experience of medical equipment, for example performing highly complex repairs on medical equipment and attending manufacturers technical courses
• Expert understanding of the technical and clinical risks associated with a wide range of medical equipment
• Understanding of the clinical, scientific and engineering principles of a broad range of complex, and highly complex medical devices
• Highly developed organisational and communication skills
