Job summary

NHS Scotland invites applications for the Clinical Development Fellowship (CDF) in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. This fixed-term, full-time post offers two 6-month placements within a 12-month programme: 6 months in anaesthesia and 6 months in ICU at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

Applicants should be trainee doctors who have completed Core Anaesthesia Training/ACCS, hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise, and be prepared for a demanding schedule including elective and emergency

Applications are invited from trainee doctors having recently completed or about to finish Core Anaesthesia Training/Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) Training to apply for the position of Clinical Development Fellow (CDF) in Anaesthesia and Intensive care.

These exciting posts are structured as two 6-month placements within a 12-month programme. 6 months in anaesthesia focusing on perioperative care for a range of surgical specialties including General Surgery, Gynaecology, Urology, and Orthopaedics at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. 6 months in Intensive Care, covering the full spectrum of Level 1 to Level 3 care delivered within our Intensive Care Unit.

Depending on the interests of the successful applicants, we may be able to accommodate one candidate undertaking a full year in critical care and the other a full year in theatre, rather than a six-month split.

In addition, as a Clinical Development Fellow, you will receive up to 8 hours per week of protected development time.

The remaining time will be allocated to clinical duties, including elective and emergency theatre work, obstetrics, outpatient clinics, and critical care, both in-hours and out-of-hours.

The department is strongly committed to teaching, training, and service development, and we would expect applicants to demonstrate enthusiasm and a proactive approach to contributing to these areas.

The appointment will be on a fixed term and full-time basis (40 hrs) and remuneration will be determined by the pay and conditions of hospital medical and dental staff (NHS Circular: PCS (DD) 2026/01).

The surgical specialties in Forth Valley Royal Hospital provides acute services covering general surgery (including breast), trauma and orthopaedics, urology, ENT, OMFS and ophthalmology. The anaesthesia department is an integral part of these teams with the aim of providing the best care to our patients.

The Intensive Care Unit in Forth Valley Royal Hospital provides ICU and HDU care for medical and surgical patients from across the acute hospital. We have 19 beds in a modern well provisioned unit. We maintain strong links to the Department of Anaesthetics but work closely with all areas of acute services in the hospital and a wide range of Allied Health Professionals.
