Job description

Due to the expanding Forensic CAMHS service in our area we are looking for a Clinical Psychologist to join the team.

The forensic CAMHS team is a small specialist community service for young people under 18 about whom there are mental health concerns and who show high risk behaviours towards others. Young people may or may not be in contact with the youth justice system or care system.

The service has strong links with many agencies working with young people both within the Thames Valley (the area we cover - Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire) and beyond. It includes different professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses and forms part of wider mental health services for children and young people (CAMHS).

We can offer a number of services to support professionals as well as supporting access other teams within CAMHS provision such as;

  • Advice
  • Case consultation
  • Assessment (joint or otherwise)
  • Case supervision
  • Training
  • Specialist interventions
Main duties of the job

The role with work with colleagues in the team for support the provision of the service across the Thames Valley. This will include working within the service model (consultation based) and supporting the service to increase the amount of direct clinical assessment and intervention. In particular the role will work with the clinical lead and consultant psychologist to support psychological thinking to the consultation, assessment and treatment of clients referred to the team. There is an assistant psychologist in the team and working with them and offering supervision will be part of the role.

This role has been funded to support the increasing level of complex neurodevelopmental needs with which our client group is presenting. As a result we anticipate the role will take a lead on supporting with neurodevelopmental testing and assessment (cognitive such as WISC/WAIS and other NDC focused assessments ) and developing pathways for this client group across the service patch and so experience of these areas is desirable.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Doctoral level training in clinical /counselling psychology including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
  • Pre-qualification training and qualification or experience in research methodology, staff training and /or other fields of applied psychology.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies with clients with severe and complex mental health problems
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
Skills
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Good Organisational and time management skills, ability to plan and prioritise own workload
Experience
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and threat of physical abuse
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, day services and inpatient settings.
