Job summary

The British Antarctic Survey invites applications for a fixed-term post in the Atmosphere, Ice and Climate team to work on the ROASII project. The role focuses on using models and observations to measure present-day rain on Antarctic sea ice and to project to 2100.

The successful candidate will handle regional climate model output, cloud radar data and collaborate with Leeds and Reading universities. Start date is 1 February 2027; security screening is required.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric sciences, geosciences or another relevant subject.
  • Analysing and visualising climate datasets from model simulations, observations and reanalysis
  • Good understanding of climate and meteorology
  • Excellent numerical skills with a strong understanding of statistics
  • Proficient in written and spoken English
  • Security screening or vetting appropriate to the role
  • Shows initiative and tackles problems independently
  • Works as part of a team and independently

Responsibilities

  • Compare rain and snowfall over Antarctic sea ice in regional climate model data with observations, notably cloud profiling radar, and identify the best-performing dataset
  • Use that dataset to quantify present-day rainfall and snowfall over Antarctic sea ice
  • Use regional climate model and reanalysis data with statistical techniques to identify synoptic processes and modes of variability linked to rain-on-sea-ice events
  • Select a subset of global climate models to derive improved rainfall projections over Antarctic sea ice to 2100
  • Attend and contribute to project meetings and international science conferences
  • Lead the writing of scientific research papers
