Job summary

Canterbury City Council is seeking a Clerk of Works (Mechanical & Electrical) to inspect and monitor M&E works across the housing and operational estate in Canterbury, Kent. You will provide technical leadership and assurance on repairs, maintenance and compliance, covering gas, heating, electrical and ventilation services.

The role combines home, office and site work with a focus on safety, quality and value for money, supporting fire safety and statutory compliance across the stock.

Qualifications

• ACS CCN1 and relevant appliance qualifications.
• 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
• ONC, HNC or HND in Building Services Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
• C&G 2394/2395 or 2391-52 Inspection and Testing qualification.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and monitor mechanical and electrical works delivered by contractors, ensuring quality, safety, time and cost.
• Act as technical specialist for building services installations, advising on repairs and long-term asset solutions.
• Oversee gas installations, heating systems, electrical installations, ventilation systems and communal building services equipment.
• Undertake defect inspections, raise remedial works and monitor contractor performance.

A fantastic Clerk of Works (M&E) job opportunity in Canterbury, Kent.

Canterbury City Council is a progressive local authority with an extremely varied stock of housing properties, commercial buildings, community facilities and operational assets.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Canterbury City Council’s collaborative Facilities Management team as Clerk of Works (Mechanical & Electrical), taking responsibility for inspecting, monitoring and assuring the quality of mechanical and electrical repairs, maintenance and compliance works delivered across our property portfolio.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with strong mechanical, gas, heating and building services experience who can provide technical leadership and assurance across a wide range of M&E installations.

About This Role

This role combines home working, office working and regular site inspections across the Council's housing and operational estate.

• You will inspect and monitor mechanical and electrical works delivered by contractors, ensuring works are completed to the required standards of quality, safety, time and cost.
• You will act as the Council's technical specialist for a wide range of building services installations, providing expert advice on repairs, maintenance and long-term asset solutions.
• You will oversee works relating to gas installations, heating systems, electrical installations, ventilation systems and communal building services equipment.
• You will undertake defect inspections, raise remedial works and monitor contractor performance to ensure excellent service delivery.
• You will review and approve variations to works and support the assessment of contractor payments.
• You will ensure residents remain safe by supporting fire safety, asbestos management and wider statutory compliance obligations across the housing stock.
• You will help shape long-term maintenance solutions, using your technical expertise to solve complex building services and engineering problems.

Working Pattern

• Monday - Friday, excluding bank holidays.
• 37 hours per week.
• Permanent full-time contract.
• 23 days of annual leave, increasing to 28 days after 5 years of service, plus a full week off over Christmas.
• Frequent site inspections across the district.
• Full driving licence and access to a vehicle required.

About You

Your Qualifications

• ACS CCN1 and relevant appliance qualifications.
• ONC, HNC or HND in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
• C&G 2394/2395 or 2391-52 Inspection and Testing qualification.
• Damp and timber qualifications or equivalent practical experience would be advantageous.

You will have a strong knowledge of:

• Gas installations, servicing and maintenance regimes.
• Commercial and domestic heating systems.
• Mechanical building services and associated plant.
• Electrical installations, testing and inspection requirements.
• Ventilation and extract systems.
• Statutory landlord compliance obligations.
• Gas Safety Regulations, Electrical Safety Regulations and associated housing legislation.
• Risk assessments, method statements and contractor management.

You will have experience of:

• Inspecting and supervising repairs and maintenance works.
• Managing contractor performance and quality assurance processes.
• Diagnosing faults and identifying effective repair solutions across mechanical and electrical systems.
• Working within social housing, local authority property services, building services engineering, facilities management or a similar environment.
• Resolving complex technical issues and providing professional advice to a range of stakeholders.
