Clerk of Works / Bridges Inspector (Structures)
Waverley Court

Salary: £32,010 - £37,626
Hours: 36 per week, 52 weeks

An opportunity has arisen within Roads & Infrastructure for the permanent post of Clerk of Works. This position is nominally based at the Council’s headquarters, Waverley Court, but is primarily site-based with some office and home-based work.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for this challenging but rewarding role. The successful candidate should have an interest in bridges, retaining walls, and inspections; previous experience is beneficial. The Council oversees over 500 bridges and structures. You will be part of a team conducting inspections and managing on-site works related to Edinburgh’s bridges, tunnels, gantries, and retaining walls.

Key duties include:

• Inspecting road structures (bridges, tunnels, gantries, retaining walls);
• Preparing contract documents for small maintenance projects such as masonry repairs, de-vegetation, graffiti removal, or painting;
• Deputising for Engineers and the Senior Engineer;
• Maintaining bridge records using the asset management database;
• Preparing engineering sketches and drawings;
• Supervising on-site works;
• Responding to structural emergencies like collapsed cellars, bridge strikes, or collapsed walls.
