Job Title: Cleaning Operative

Responsible to: Cleaning Supervisor or other authorized person.

Job Purpose: Undertake, as part of a team, the cleaning of designated areas within the premises, as directed by the line manager.

1. Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Sweep, suction clean, mop, dry buff, spray clean, spray wax, machine scrub and dry, strip and re-polish floors using appropriate equipment.
  2. Clean and remove stains from soft floor surfaces (carpets/matting) using suitable cleaning methods.
  3. Clean toilet and shower areas, including fixtures and fittings.
  4. Clean, wash, and dust ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings, and internal surfaces up to 3.35 meters; polish furniture where appropriate.
  5. Empty and clean internal litter bins and remove litter to designated collection points.
2. General Conditions
  • All duties must comply with relevant health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, COSHH Regulations, and other legal requirements.
  • Perform duties under normal working conditions associated with the role.
  • Cover colleagues on sick leave following the Education Authority’s procedures.
  • Report absences according to the authority’s procedures, completing and signing relevant forms.
  • Wear protective clothing or workwear issued for cleaning duties.
  • Wear flat-soled, enclosed-toe footwear during cleaning tasks.
  • Use and care for cleaning equipment properly; report any defects immediately.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork accurately.
  • Carry out duties within the employee’s competence, including tasks of similar grade.
3. Training
  • Employees must accept training for roles graded higher than their own; payment is conditional on the requirement to perform higher-level duties.
  • Employees must accept training to undertake duties within their own grade, including induction and refresher training.

In accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act (1998), the post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and adhere to equality legislation at all times.

Posts involving work in educational institutions are subject to the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007. Successful applicants will require an enhanced disclosure check costing £33. Further details will be provided with the employment contract.
