Job summary

Tops Day Nurseries is hiring a part-time cleaner in Portsmouth to help keep our nurseries clean and safe for children. You’ll work evenings 12.5 hours per week, with duties including disinfection, laundry considerations, and stock checks. DBS check will be completed if not already held.

We value reliability, punctuality and a strong work ethic, and you’ll join a growing, employee‑owned childcare group with opportunities across multiple sites in the South of England.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a cleaning role is advantageous.
• Good understanding of hygiene and safety standards around children.
• Ability to follow cleaning schedules and work independently.

Responsibilities

• Disinfect surfaces, toys, and furniture to maintain a hygienic environment.
• Empty bins and dispose of waste appropriately.
• Keep communal areas, kitchens and staff rooms clean and tidy.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum and dust all areas.
• Use cleaning equipment, materials and chemicals safely.
• Report problems, faults and damage promptly.

About The Role

Our cleaner’s ensure the nursery premises is clean and tidy including laundry room. Also, ensure stock is checked and re-ordering is done in sufficient time to have sufficient for the job. You are able to operate all equipment necessary for the job - eg vacuum cleaners, dish washers, washing machines, tumble driers, steam cleaners.

About The Nursery

Tops Lakeside Nursery is a 61-place eco-friendly day nursery and preschool in Cosham, Portsmouth, providing Early Education and Care for children aged 3 months to preschool. Our newly built, open-plan setting offers bright, natural learning spaces, including an extended cabin classroom to support our growing preschool. We provide a warm, friendly environment where children are encouraged to explore, play, and learn through a broad, child-led curriculum that supports independence, language, and social development. What does the role involve?

• Disinfecting surfaces, toys, and furniture to maintain a hygienic environment.
• Emptying bins and disposing of waste appropriately.
• Maintaining the cleanliness of communal areas, including kitchens and staff rooms.
• Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting all areas.
• Able to use the correct cleaning equipment, materials and chemicals safely and appropriately.
• To report any problems, faults, and damage appropriately.

What are we looking for?

• Previous experience in a cleaning role (experience in a childcare or educational setting is a plus).
• A good understanding of hygiene and safety standards, particularly in environments where children are present.
• Aware of the sustainable ethos of the company, including being actively involved with energy conservation and recycling.
• Attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently and independently.
• Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
• Ability to follow cleaning schedules and complete tasks in a timely manner.

Important Safeguarding Information

• Hold (or be willing to obtain) an enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service. If you don’t yet have one, you’ll need to cover the cost.
• Be eligible to work in regulated roles- not on the Children’s Barred List.
• Successfully complete background and reference checks.
